Book Description
Irradiation experiments were conducted in order to determine the effect of radiation damage on the elastic-plastic ductile fracture toughness of pressure vessel steels. Curves for the J-integral versus crack growth resistance (?a) were established on specimens taken out of two nuclear reactor pressure vessel steels before and after neutron irradiation at 290°C to a fluence of 3.1019 n/cm2 (work function energy E > 1 MeV). The J-?a tests were performed at room temperature (25°C) and service temperature (290°C). The main results obtained are as follows:.

Book Description
A study on the effect of irradiation on the toughness of pressure vessel materials in the ductile regime has been undertaken. Compact tension (CT) specimens of two pressure vessel steels (A533 B and A508 Class 3) and a weld material of fitting chemical composition were irradiated and received neutron fluences of 3 and 8 x 1019 n/cm2. The J-R curves of these materials were determined between 100 and 290°C. Only a very small influence of irradiation was observed for tests at 290°C. In irradiated condition, the effect of the test temperature is not noticeable. At lower temperature, but in the ductile regime, the weld material appears to be more sensitive to neutron irradiation than the two steels. The forged material exhibited a surprisingly high shift of transition temperature since cleavage rupture occurred up to 100°C.

Book Description
This report presents studies on the irradiation effects in low-alloy reactor pressure vessel steels. The Fourth Heavy-Section Steel Technology (HSST) Irradiation Series, almost completed, was aimed at elastic-plastic and fully plastic fracture toughness of low-copper weldments (''current practice welds''). A typical nuclear pressure vessel plate steel was included for statistical purposes. The Fifth HSST Irradiation Series, now in progress, is aimed at determining the shape of the K/sub IR/ curve after significant radiation-induced shift of the transition temperatures. This series includes irradiated test specimens of thicknesses up to 100 mm and weldment compositions typical of early nuclear power reactor pressure vessel welds. 27 refs., 22 figs. (JDB).

Evaluation of Irradiation Embrittlement of 21⁄4Cr-1Mo Steel in Terms of Elastic-Plastic Fracture Toughness

Evaluation of Irradiation Embrittlement of 21⁄4Cr-1Mo Steel in Terms of Elastic-Plastic Fracture Toughness PDF Author: K. Fukaya

Pages : 17

Book Description
Neutron irradiation embrittlement of 21⁄4Cr-1Mo steels for the pressure vessel material of the high temperature engineering test reactor (HTTR) is evaluated in terms of elastic-plastic fracture toughness, and the effects of neutron irradiation on thermal aging embrittlement is discussed. Plate materials including weld joints and forged materials were irradiated at temperatures of 290, 350, and 400°C up to a fluence of 4 % 1023 n/m2 (E > 1 MeV). Fracture toughness testing using disk-shaped compact tension specimens was conducted in the upper shelf region. Results show that fracture toughness degradation caused by 400°C irradiation has a different character than that imposed by irradiation at lower temperatures. The cause is explained in terms of irradiation-enhanced thermal aging embrittlement.
