Book Description
Soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) has been cultivated in Asia since time immemorial. However in the United States this culture only became important in the twentieth century. It is now one of the most importat crops in North America. The production of soybeans in the South Central and Southeastern States has increased. This shift in production from the North Central States has accentuated the seedborn disease problems of this crop. Fungicide seed treatment can help to control seedborn diseases and improve germination. A good nodulation is of maximum importance for soybean yield and it can be obtained only in presence of an effective strain of Rhizobium japonicum. Funcicidal effect upon the rhizobia is not clearly understood and consequently seed treatment is not generally a recommended practice for soybeans in Georgia...

Effect of Fungicides on Nodulation of Soybeans

Category : Fungicides

Pages : 100
Book Description
The present investigation was conducted to obtain information on the effect of Thiram, Captan, and Panogen as seed treatment for soybeans. The objective of this experiment was to determine how these fungicides affect: Rhizobium japonicum growth, Seed germination, Nodulation, and yields. The fungicides Thiran, Captan and Panogen 15 were used for soybean seed tratment. Measurements were made on the effect of fungicides on Rhizobium growth in agar medium on the laboratory, and soybean germination, nodulation, and yield in the greenhouse and field. Panogen was highly toxic to nodule bacteria in agar medium. Captan and Thiran were less toxic than Panagen (Thiram being the least toxic). All fungicides improved seed germination when planted in the greenhouse with hi gh soil moisture. Captan and Panogen improved the stand more than Thiram. When observed early in the growing season in the field, nodulation was decreased by Panogen. Thiran and Captan had effect on nodulation in the field. Upon approaching maturity all fungicide vtrated soybeans had become nodulated. Soybean yield were not influenced by fungicide treatments.

Pesticide Interactions in Crop Production
Author: J. Altman
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1351083902
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 591
Book Description
Pesticide Interactions in Crop Production: Beneficial and Deleterious Effects evaluates the effects of pesticides on plants by exploring the physical, chemical, biological, and ecological interactions of pesticides that influence a crop. The effects of pesticides on the environment and on the crop pests themselves are considered as well. Specific topics addressed include iatrogenic responses, the fate of pesticides applied to cereals under field conditions, the persistance of pesticides on target crops, the effect of pesticides on soil symbionts, and the role of ecological agriculture on conventional and organic cropping systems. Pesticide Interactions in Crop Production: Beneficial and Deleterious Effects will be an important volume for agriculturalists, phytologists, mycologists, soil biologists, plant pathologists, tropical ecologists, arboriculturalists, and other researchers interested in the effects of pesticides on crops and soil.
