This volume is the collection of papers presented at the workshop on 'The Stability of Spatially Varying and Time Dependent Flows" sponsored by the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (lCASE) and NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) during August 19- 23, 1985. The purpose of this workshop was to bring together some of the experts in the field for an exchange of ideas to update the current status of knowledge and to help identify trends for future research. Among the invited speakers were D.M. Bushnell, M. Goldstein, P. Hall, Th. Herbert, R.E. Kelly, L. Mack, A.H. Nayfeh, F.T. Smith, and C. von Kerczek. The contributed papers were by A. Bayliss, R. Bodonyi, S. Cowley, C. Grosch, S. Lekoudis, P. Monkewitz, A. Patera, and C. Streett. In the first article, Bushnell provides a historical background on laminar flow control (LFC) research and summarizes the crucial role played by stability theory in LFC system design. He also identifies problem areas in stability theory requiring further research from the view-point of ap plications to LFC design. It is an excellent article for theoreticians looking for some down-to-earth applications of stability theory.

A semiempirical expression for boundary-layer transition location is developed based on the concept of a critical ratio of inertial to viscous shearing stresses at laminar breakdown. Extensive comparisons between predicted and measured transition locations on a 10-deg included-angle cone at transonic speeds are shown with the data predicted to within 10%. This experiment studied the effect of streamwise vortices on unsteady turbulent boundary-layer separation. The objectives were to document the flow field, to characterize the time response of the boundary layer, and to understand the actual mechanisms by which the streamwise vortices modify boundary-layer behavior. A new configuration for non-obtrusive three-component Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) determined the phase averaged velocity and Reynolds stress components, in an unsteady water tunnel, at a momentum thickness Reynolds number of 1840. The streamwise vortices were created by three pairs of half-delta wing vortex generators, while the boundary-layer separation was controlled through impulsively initiated opposite-wall suction, which created a strong adverse pressure gradient. The time response of the freestream velocity demonstrates that convection is the primary mechanism by which vortex generators modify the response of the boundary layer. There is an initial fast response throughout the boundary layer which is unaffected by the presence of vortex generators, followed by a slow or convective response, the magnitude of which is substantially modified by the presence of the vortex generators.
