Book Description
Correspondence from Edward Tuckerman to John Torrey, dated 1838-1856, discussing an enormous number of plant species, including a large number of lichens and alpine species. Torrey's junior by almost two decades, Tuckerman addresses him in exceedingly modest tones: in 1838, early in their correspondence, he opens a letter, "Dear Sir, I feel deeply the privilege I enjoy in thus addressing you." Five years later: "Excuse my boldness in thus speaking of my little paper." Tuckerman generously ascribes the frequent gaps in Torrey's correspondence to his busy schedule, though in a fragment of an undated letter to Asa Gray-- included in this collection-- a touch of hurt finds its way into his words. "I am sorry Dr. Torrey has still left my letter unnoticed-- as well as my book-- but I have no doubt he has reasons for it though I cannot imagine what they are." Obsolete and unresolved plant names mentioned include Asagraea, Aspidium aculeatum, Bartsia pallida, Ceratoschoenus, Ceratoschoenus corniculatus, Corallorhiza multiflora, Empetrum conradii, Geaster quadrifidum, Lactuca integrifolia, Lasierpa hispidula, Panicum clandestinum, Paspalum ciliatifolium, Psilocarya, Sphaeria densta, Trichelostylis mucronulata, Tubularia aquatica, Tuckermannia, and Ulmus racemosa.
