Book Description
Excerpt from Engineering Education in the British Dominions The department of engineering and applied sciences, has for its professed Object to provide a system Of general education Of a practical character for young men who are to be engaged in professional employments, such as Surveying and Civil Engineering, Telegraphy, Building Construction and Archi tecture, Mechanical Engineering and the higher branches Of Manufacturing Art, or in commercial and agricultural pursuits, or who wish to prepare for the Whitworth Scholarship Examina tion, or for entrance into the Engineering Department Of the Royal Navy, or for Civil Engineering Appointments in India. The ordinary engineering course occupies three years, and forms an appropriate introduction to that kind Of instruction which can only be Obtained within the walls of the manufactory, or by actually taking part in the labours of the surveyor, the engineer, or the architect. Museums, containing mechanical and physical apparatus, chemical and industrial products, valuable collections Of models and specimens, &c., illustrating the subjects taught, are open to the students. Teaching Computational Thinking

Teaching Computational Thinking PDF Author: Maureen D. Neumann
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 0262045052
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 201

Book Description
A guide for educators to incorporate computational thinking—a set of cognitive skills applied to problem solving—into a broad range of subjects. Computational thinking—a set of mental and cognitive tools applied to problem solving—is a fundamental skill that all of us (and not just computer scientists) draw on. Educators have found that computational thinking enhances learning across a range of subjects and reinforces students’ abilities in reading, writing, and arithmetic. This book offers a guide for incorporating computational thinking into middle school and high school classrooms, presenting a series of activities, projects, and tasks that employ a range of pedagogical practices and cross a variety of content areas. As students problem solve, communicate, persevere, work as a team, and learn from mistakes, they develop a concrete understanding of the abstract principles used in computer science to create code and other digital artifacts. The book guides students and teachers to integrate computer programming with visual art and geometry, generating abstract expressionist–style images; construct topological graphs that represent the relationships between characters in such literary works as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Romeo and Juliet; apply Newtonian physics to the creation of computer games; and locate, analyze, and present empirical data relevant to social and political issues. Finally, the book lists a variety of classroom resources, including the programming languages Scratch (free to all) and Codesters (free to teachers). An accompanying website contains the executable programs used in the book’s activities.

Book Description
Excerpt from Engineering Education I will preface this article with a quotation from an address on medical education which that great English biologist and keenest of observers, Prof. Thomas Henry Huxley, delivered some thirty-six years ago to the students in University College, London, and I will take the liberty of substituting for the words medical education, the words engineering education. Cycles of Invention and Discovery

Cycles of Invention and Discovery PDF Author: Venkatesh Narayanamurti
Publisher: Harvard University Press
ISBN: 0674974158
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 177

Book Description
Cycles of Invention and Discovery offers an in-depth look at the real-world practice of science and engineering. It shows how the standard categories of “basic” and “applied” have become a hindrance to the organization of the U.S. science and technology enterprise. Tracing the history of these problematic categories, Venkatesh Narayanamurti and Toluwalogo Odumosu document how historical views of policy makers and scientists have led to the construction of science as a pure ideal on the one hand and of engineering as a practical (and inherently less prestigious) activity on the other. Even today, this erroneous but still widespread distinction forces these two endeavors into separate silos, misdirects billions of dollars, and thwarts progress in science and engineering research. The authors contrast this outmoded perspective with the lived experiences of researchers at major research laboratories. Using such Nobel Prize–winning examples as magnetic resonance imaging, the transistor, and the laser, they explore the daily micro-practices of research, showing how distinctions between the search for knowledge and creative problem solving break down when one pays attention to the ways in which pathbreaking research actually happens. By studying key contemporary research institutions, the authors highlight the importance of integrated research practices, contrasting these with models of research in the classic but still-influential report Science the Endless Frontier. Narayanamurti and Odumosu’s new model of the research ecosystem underscores that discovery and invention are often two sides of the same coin that moves innovation forward.
