Idealism in National Character

Idealism in National Character PDF Author: Robert Falconer
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781331275305
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
Excerpt from Idealism in National Character: Essays and Addresses The doctrine that the State is a non-moral institution is dead. That was the theory of the Prussian professors. The war has killed it. If a state endeavours to compass only non-moral ends in a non-moral way the inevitable result will be that it will become immoral and its individual members will be corrupted. But this evil doctrine was not exclusively German. Men were found in our midst bold enough to argue that the State stands by itself in a position in which the distinctions of right and wrong do not apply; that expediency alone is to be taken into account, and when individuals enter its service or take part in political affairs they may let questions of conscience stand aside if need be. But that is not the principle of Democracy. We believe that the State consists of the individuals who compose it, and that a person's life is such a consistent unity that when he performs his duties to the State he can only fulfil them as a moral citizen. Book Description
Excerpt from A System of National Education There can be no doubt that the Educational System of Europe is a great advance on the many methods of antiquity, but its defects are also palpable. It is based on an in sufficient knowledge of human psycho logy and it is only safeguarded in Europe from disastrous results by the refusal of the ordinary student to subject himself to the processes it involves, his habit of studying only so much as he must to avoid punishment or to pass an immediate test, his resort to active habits and vigorous physical exercise. In India the disas trous effects of the system on body, mind and character are only too appa rent. The first problem in a National System of Education is to give an Education as comprehensive as the European and more thorough, with out the evils of strain and cramming. Book Description

Book Description
Excerpt from American Ideals, Character and Life It may be added that one form of the work of this Endowment is an effort, by Exchange Professorships, or Lectureships, to make the different peoples better acquainted with one another, and to lay the foundations of inter national peace in international knowledge. Book Description
Excerpt from The Foundations of Education No one will claim that we have yet attained perfection, either in method or result. We spend vast sums of money, we claim the devotion of a great army of men and women in the schoolroom, great minds are bestowing their very best thought -and no one would withhold a particle of this treasure, this consecration, this energy - yet we are confronted with evils which education has not eliminated, and faults in our national character which seem rather to grow than abate. Category : History

Book Description
Excerpt from A School History of the United States The object aimed at in the preparation of this book was to produce a systematic, brief, clear, and authentic history of the United States for the use of schools. The plan is simple. N o arbitrary division into historical periods and eras is employed, but each chapter embraces associated events and forms a natural link in an unbroken chain. A strictly chronological order of arrangement is followed, whereby occurrences are shown in their true relation to one another, and to their causes. The most important dates are made prominent in the text by a peculiar type. A condensed record of general progress is placed at the end of almost every chapter, designed to interest the pupil in the civil and domestic character of the country, and in employments, institutions, and ideas not directly connected with wars, politics, or national legislation. Democracy and Education

Democracy and Education PDF Author: John Dewey
Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
ISBN:
Category : Juvenile Nonfiction
Languages : en
Pages : 456

Book Description
. Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
