Handbook of Research in Education Finance and Policy

Handbook of Research in Education Finance and Policy PDF Author: Helen F. Ladd
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135041059
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 903

Book Description
Sponsored by the Association for Education Finance and Policy (AEFP), the second edition of this groundbreaking handbook assembles in one place the existing research-based knowledge in education finance and policy, with particular attention to elementary and secondary education. Chapters from the first edition have been fully updated and revised to reflect current developments, new policies, and recent research. With new chapters on teacher evaluation, alternatives to traditional public schooling, and cost-benefit analysis, this volume provides a readily available current resource for anyone involved in education finance and policy. The Handbook of Research in Education Finance and Policy traces the evolution of the field from its initial focus on school inputs and revenue sources used to finance these inputs, to a focus on educational outcomes and the larger policies used to achieve them. Chapters show how decision making in school finance inevitably interacts with decisions about governance, accountability, equity, privatization, and other areas of education policy. Because a full understanding of important contemporary issues requires inputs from a variety of perspectives, the Handbook draws on contributors from a number of disciplines. Although many of the chapters cover complex, state-of-the-art empirical research, the authors explain key concepts in language that non-specialists can understand. This comprehensive, balanced, and accessible resource provides a wealth of factual information, data, and wisdom to help educators improve the quality of education in the United States.

Educating for Liberty

Educating for Liberty PDF Author: Douglas A. Jeffrey
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780916308551
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 340

Book Description
James Madison, the Father of our Constitution, explained in Federalist 55 that the moral character of a people, molded through education, is the most essential in a nation where people rule. This understanding of education no longer predominates in America. Even as our government takes more of a hand in education than it has traditionally - or than it should constitutionally - it concerns itself primarily with regulating admissions and hiring policies according to race and gender, and with promoting "multicultural" curricula that downplay America's Western heritage. It concerns itself little, if at all, with the character of its citizens. The fact that our government today appears indifferent, or even hostile, to the kind of education America's Founders thought vital to preserving liberty - the kind of education offered at Hillsdale College - suggests that in many ways our government has grown indifferent, or even hostile to liberty itself. Under these circumstances, a large part of the work of Hillsdale College is devoted to promoting liberty and its underlying moral principles nationwide. Central to this mission is Imprimis, a national monthly speech digest of presentations made at Hillsdale conferences and seminars by leaders, writers, and scholars who support limited government, free enterprise, individual rights, personal responsibility and strong national defense. Imprimis was launched thirty years ago with a circulation of only a few thousand. Ten years ago, upon the publication of In the First Place, a collection of the best of Imprimis's first twenty years, its circulation had grown to 335,000. As Imprimis turns thirty, its circulation is well over 1,000,000 - and growing. Educating for Liberty collects thirty of the first 360 speeches published in Imprimis. Some date back to its earliest days; others are quite recent. Each is worth reading. Together they set a high standard as Imprimis looks to the future. Authors include Larry P. Arnn, Russell Kirk, Lynne V. Cheney, Clarence Thomas, Thomas Sowell, Edwin Meese III, Mark Helprin, Ronald Reagan, George Gilder, John Stossel, Malcolm Muggeridge, Michael Novak, Michael Medved, William J. Bennett, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Jeane Kirkpatrick, Margaret Thatcher, and Jesse Helms.

This edition lists more than 6,600 accredited higher education institutions, including public and private; two-year, four-year, and vocational and technical schools; as well as some colleges and universities located outside the United States. All are accredited by national, regional, or professional and specialized accrediting agencies recognized by either the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. The directory is divided into three sections: degree-granting institutions, non-degree-granting institutions, and accredited programs affiliated with nonaccredited institutions. In each section, institutions are listed alphabetically by state. A comprehensive index makes it easy to find any institution and includes extensive cross-references.

The Sustainability Curriculum

The Sustainability Curriculum PDF Author: John Blewitt
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136552103
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 276

Book Description
The links between education and sustainable development are deepening, although subject to much controversy and debate. The success of the sustainability discourse depends both on the pedagogic and research functions of higher education. Similarly, for higher education itself to remain relevant and engaged it faces pressure not only to integrate the insights and lessons drawn from the perspective of sustainable development, but also to be responsive to scrutiny of its own practices in relation to sustainability. Among professionals in higher education, sustainable development has its supporters and detractors. It is embraced by some individuals and departments while being perceived by others as a threat to the coherence of particular disciplines. Although it is not currently an academic discipline in its own right, increasing public and professional familiarity with the term, and the increasing urgency of global calls for the implementation of sustainable development mean that this is rapidly changing. This volume analyses the impact of the concepts and practices of sustainability and sustainable development on various academic disciplines, institutional practices, fields of study and methods of enquiry. The contributors, drawn from a wide-range of disciplines, perspectives, educational levels and institutional contexts, examine the purpose of the modern university and the nature of sustainable education, which includes exploring links to social movements for sustainability projects, curriculum change, culture and biodiversity, values relating to gender equality and global responsibility, and case studies on the transformation, or otherwise, of some specific disciplines.
