Este livro é sobre a educação ambiental como princípio da política de meio ambiente, na interface com dois instrumentos sobrepostos: as unidades de conservação e a _ scalização ambiental. A obra reconhece e demonstra disputas de hegemonia — de concepções e de práticas — em basicamente dois campos sociais: o da educação ambiental e o da conservação. Ambos são atravessados por projetos societários antagônicos, um de maior aprofundamento da democracia de base popular; outro de hegemonia da lógica de mercado e diminuição do Estado no atendimento de direitos sociais diversos — incluindo aquele referente a um meio ambiente ecologicamente equilibrado — e fortalecimento do Estado para assegurar privilégios privados e concentrados, injustos e insustentáveis. Com base em pesquisa cujo recorte foi uma experiência entre 2013 e 2016 no planejamento da _ scalização ambiental em unidades de conservação paulistas, este livro aborda desde o debate no campo da conservação, aproximando-se de uma de suas estratégias, as áreas protegidas, até as disputas no campo da educação ambiental, contextualizando-a nos espaços de participação social nas políticas de gestão ambiental pública. Para isso, essas disputas de hegemonia são analisadas a partir de categorias desenvolvidas por Antonio Gramsci. Esse recurso a uma leitura de Gramsci no contexto socioambiental contemporâneo nos ajuda a elevá-las a uma disputa de hegemonia mais ampla, mais estrutural e revolucionária — a disputa de hegemonia na totalidade das relações entre o Estado em sentido mais estrito, a sociedade civil e a estrutura das relações sociais de produção. Nesse contexto, a educação ambiental, com sua potência emancipatória e revolucionária, e as unidades de conservação, como vértices de transformações radicais e materiais nos territórios, con_ guram-se como trincheiras que podem contribuir para a construção de outro Estado em sentido amplo e outro projeto societário.
