Book Description
After agreeing on the methodology and outline of the country reports, the authors of the case studies, for each feeding strategy and farming system, analyzed demographic factors (including age and marital status, education and ownership structure), physical characteristics (average number of ponds and average pond size), and other input features (stocking strategies, feeding practices, types of feed, frequency and intensity of feeding and labour utilization). The case studies also identified the principal input costs, assessed the economic rates of return (gross and net margins), returns to labour, land and capital, gross and net total factor productivity, break-even prices and production and returns on capital for each feeding strategy. Problem areas were identified for the different farming systems.

Aquafeed value chain analysis and a review of regulatory framework of striped catfish farming in Viet Nam

Aquafeed value chain analysis and a review of regulatory framework of striped catfish farming in Viet Nam PDF Author: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Publisher: Food & Agriculture Org.
ISBN: 9251320047
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 71

Book Description
This Fisheries and Aquaculture Technical Paper presents the findings of a value chain analysis of the aquafeed (aquatic animal feed) sub-sector for the striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) farming in Viet Nam, including a review of aquafeed regulatory framework in the country. The striped catfish (pangasius) production sub-sector is characterized by intensive pond production technology and high-quality production inputs. In 2014, annual production of pangasius was 1 143 797 tonnes. The key actors in the value chain comprise input suppliers, including feed ingredients suppliers, feed manufacturers, and hatchery operators (seed producers), along with fingerling and grow-out farmers, fish processors, exporters, consumers and service providers. In recent years, large-scale vertically integrated enterprises have started to emerge that operate along the entire value chain, and these now dominate many areas of production.

Ecosystem Management

Ecosystem Management PDF Author: Arnab Banerjee
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1394231229
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 566

Book Description
This book is essential for anyone who wants to understand the challenges of environmental degradation and learn about the sustainable solutions needed to address these critical issues. Today, the entire globe is suffering from various forms of environmental degradation, resource depletion, and an imbalance of natural phenomena. In this context, one of the major issues is loss of ecosystem services and proper functioning of natural ecosystems. Pollution, ecological invasion, loss of biodiversity, land degradation, and loss of productivity across various ecosystems have become the biggest challenges humankind is faced with. Considering Sustainable Development Goals 2030, the major target is to restore degraded ecosystems and their functionality, which will bring back the valuable ecosystem services of a diverse ecosystem. Ecosystem Management: Climate Change and Sustainability addresses all these issues to teach a global readership the dimensions of ecosystem services and ways toward a future sustainable world.

New Technologies in Aquaculture

New Technologies in Aquaculture PDF Author: Gavin Burnell
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1845696476
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 1226

Book Description
With wild stocks declining due to over-fishing, aquaculture will have a more significant role to play in meeting future demand for fresh fish. Developments in research continue to lead to improvements in aquaculture production systems, resulting in increased production efficiency, higher product quality for consumers and a more sustainable industry. New technologies in aquaculture reviews essential advances in these areas.Part one focuses on the genetic improvement of farmed species and control of reproduction, with chapters on genome-based technologies in aquaculture research, selective breeding and the production of single sex and sterile populations, among other topics. Parts two and three review key issues in health, diet and husbandry, such as the control of viral and parasitic diseases, diet and husbandry techniques to improve disease resistance, advances in diets for particular fish species and the impact of harmful algal bloom on shellfisheries aquaculture. Chapters in Parts three and four then examine the design of different aquaculture production systems, including offshore technologies, tank-based recirculating systems and ponds, and key environmental issues, such as the prediction and assessment of the impact of aquaculture. Concluding chapters focus on farming new species. With its well-known editors and distinguished international team of contributors, New technologies in aquaculture is an essential purchase for professionals and researchers in the aquaculture industry. - Reviews recent advances in improvements in aquaculture production - Focuses on the genetic improvement and reproduction of farmed species, including genome-based technologies - Discusses key health issues, including advances in disease diagnosis, vaccine development and other emerging methods to control pathogens in aquaculture

The making of a blue revolution in Bangladesh: Enablers, impacts, and the path ahead for aquaculture

The making of a blue revolution in Bangladesh: Enablers, impacts, and the path ahead for aquaculture PDF Author: Shahidur Rashid
Publisher: Intl Food Policy Res Inst

Applied Ecology

Applied Ecology PDF Author: Jan Frouz
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030832252
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 422

Book Description
This book offers a comprehensive introduction to basic ecological and biological principles underlying modern agriculture, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture, and explains how these principles are used to increase the production of food and other raw materials (wood, biofuels, fibers and other materials). The book is translated into English, originally published in Czech by Karolinum Press, Charles University, and provides new updated information to discuss how the intensification of the production of these goods changes the structure of ecosystems concerning energy and nutrient flows, and how these changes affect the functioning of ecosystems and the subsequent provisions of other non-productive ecosystem services. Additionally, the authors describe the methods by which contemporary science and society strives to increase the sustainability of agriculture, forestry and fisheries to maintain not only the production of food and other goods, but also other ecosystem services. Although not a textbook on agriculture, forestry and fisheries, the book familiarizes readers with the principles of their technologies, because the impact on ecosystems is largely based on the technological processes used. The book is primarily focused on temperate ecosystems, but it contains a number of examples about marine and tropical ecosystems impacted by globalization and our consumer behavior. The book will be of interest to students and researchers with backgrounds in ecology and environmental science, as well as non-experts interested in ecology and environmental protection.

Ecosystem Services in Agricultural and Urban Landscapes

Ecosystem Services in Agricultural and Urban Landscapes PDF Author: Stephen Wratten
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118506243
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 284

Book Description
Ecosystem services are the resources and processes supplied by natural ecosystems which benefit humankind (for example, pollination of crops by insects, or water filtration by wetlands). They underpin life on earth, provide major inputs to many economic sectors and support our lifestyles. Agricultural and urban areas are by far the largest users of ecosystems and their services and (for the first time) this book explores the role that ecosystem services play in these managed environments. The book also explores methods of evaluating ecosystem services, and discusses how these services can be maintained and enhanced in our farmlands and cities. This book will be useful to students and researchers from a variety of fields, including applied ecology, environmental economics, agriculture and forestry, and also to local and regional planners and policy makers.
