Book Description
Excerpt from Economic Inquiries and Studies, Vol. 2 In commencing our labours for another session, we are painfully reminded that during the past twelve months the Society has sustained two heavy losses, in the death of Mr. Newmarch and Professor Jevons. At a meeting like the present, some tribute is due to the memory of these distinguished members. To some extent a record of Mr. Newmarch s death and services has already been preserved in our proceedings, but something, I feel, ought also to be said at this inaugural meeting, considering his many and diversified statistical labours, and the length of the period during which he was identified with us, first as Secretary and Editor of the "Journal," and afterwards as President. The death of Professor Jevons - all the more to be regretted as a lamentable accident-has occurred since the last meeting of last session, and this is the first opportunity we have had of paying a tribute to his memory. With regard to Mr. Newmarch, it will be unnecessary to go over the record of his life in detail, or to enumerate his various works; of these a very full account will be found in the March number of the "Journal" of this year. Book Description
Excerpt from Principles of Economics, Vol. 2 The length of the period that has elapsed since the appearance of the first volume of the English version seems to call for an apology on the part of the translator, and he tenders the same herewith. In doing so, he may, perhaps, be allowed to mention two extenuating circumstances. One is, that since the year 1903, when what has come to be known as the Fiscal Question was suddenly Sprung upon the country, the amount of time and energy at his disposal, after satisfying the claims of a very busy Department of the Public Service, has been greatly restricted. The other is, that a considerable portion of the translation had to be done a second time owing to the accidental destruction of a bundle of the completed manuscript during the translator's absence abroad. Book Description
Excerpt from Economics, Vol. 2 In the first place, production may consist of a rc arrangement of particles of matter, resulting in the crea tion of what some economists call form-utilities. This kind of production takes place in the case of agricultural products, where the particles of matter which were useless to man as long as they remained in the soil, become useful to him when they are transformed into plant tissue and are thus rendered available for food. So, too, a form. Utility is created when useless ore is changed into useful metal by smelting. Secondly, production may consist of a transfering of matter from place to place, or what we may call the crea tion of place utilities. An instance of this is found in the transportation from the Niagara Peninsula to Toronto and other cities of surplus fruit which would otherwise rot uselessly upon the ground. _the creation of place-utilities occurs whenever farm produce is increased in value by transportation to_ the cities, or whenever manufactured articles are increased in value by transportation from the city to the farm. Book Description
Excerpt from Discussions in Economics and Statistics, Vol. 2 of 2: Statistics, National Growth, Social Economics Of course, the hours of labor, for summer and for winter, should be shown, and the number of months each establish ment has been running less than full time. Two other ques tions relating to labor, although not vitally important, would be exceedingly interesting and instructive, as tending to Show the Ishmaelitish character of our industry; viz., the greatest number employed at any one time, and the total number of persons employed during the year. The difference between these figures and those which show the average number en gaged (the stereotyped question of the census) would present very striking and very significant results, both in regard to the quality of our labor and the habits of our people. That, after requiring these particulars, the schedule should call for the amount paid in wages during the year, is not one of the disputed points. The only question might be as to the form of the inquiry. That given above is preferable to cost of labor (as in since the latter is ambiguous, and is commonly understood to embrace the value of the labor of owners or partners when working at their trade, which is precisely what ought not to be included. Their remunera tion is to be derived from the profits of their business, and those are to be calculated from the difference between the united cost of labor, materials, and power, and the total value of the resulting product. It is of prime importance to oh tain the wages of the country, pure and simple. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
