Author: John Cleary Pearson
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Blue crab
Languages : en
Pages : 32
Book Description
The blue crab (Callinectes sapidus Rathbun) of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts supports the largest crab fishery in the United States. Chesapeake Bay on the Atlantic coast and the estuarine waters of Louisiana on the Gulf coast now furnish 75 percent of the catch. Fluctuations in the abundance of blue crabs have occurred over the past half century in Chesapeake Bay where year-round fisheries have long been established. This report examines the nature and causes of fhese fluctuations. Several natural factors which appear to regulate the annual survival rate and the abundance of the blue crab are discussed on the basis of available knowledge.

Laws, Regulations, and Environmental Factors and Their Potential Effects on the Stocks and Fisheries for the Blue Crab, Callinectes Sapidus, in the Chesapeake Bay Region, 1880-1940
Author: W. A. Van Engel
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Blue crab fisheries
Languages : en
Pages : 116
Book Description
"In the period 1880 to 1940, the blue crab fisheries of Chesapeake Bay evolved from a relatively small industry to one having a significant economic impact on watermen, processors and shippers, and the coastal communities, and the need for studied legislation and administration of the industry. The growth of the fishery resulted also in a need for well thought out science based on legislation and administration of the fishery. This text examines whether any of several variables had effects on the stocks and the successes or failures of the fisheries, with the aim of more informed planning of scientific studies, and recommendations to administrators"--Preface.

Regulating the Blue Crab, Callinectes Sapidus, Fishery in Virginia
Author: James E. Kirkley
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Blue crab fisheries
Languages : en
Pages : 34
Book Description
"The blue crab fishery has been one of the most important fisheries of Virginia; the actual economic importance of the fishery, however, is not well known. There appears to be an urgent need to better manage and regulate the resource and the fishery. In this brief paper, an overview of regulatory options for managing and regulating the blue crab fishery is provided. The authors initially focus on open-access strategies, and subsequently present a discussion of regulations that address the common-property, open-access fishery. Prior to discussing management options, the authors discuss goals and objectives of resource management"--National Sea Grant Library publication website.
