A review of ecological effects of offshore dredging is presented, based on literature review and personal contacts, to provide a framework for determination of need for further knowledge. In general, little concrete effort aimed specifically at the determination of effects of offshore dredging was uncovered, although basic ecological works that are generally applicable are available. The report shows that the beach may be divided into three zones on the basis of moisture and biota found, and describes the possible effects on these biota resulting from offshore dredging and deposition of sediments on a beach. Background descriptive material and impacts on both offshore dredged areas and nourished beaches, and suggestions for further research follow.

This report presents the results of the first two phases of a research project aimed at developing new dredging systems for beach nourishment from offshore sources. As an introduction to the subject matter, the current situation in the United States regarding beach nourishment and offshore dredging equipment is outlined. Example nourishment projects accomplished and the range of equipment used to date. Next, the engineering considerations involved in selecting an optimum nourishment system for a particular project or project category are presented, and their effects on system characteristics are discussed. The main body of the report presents the results of an investigation into equipment suitable for offshore nourishment work. Approximately 50 examples are described illustrating dredge types, pipelines, connections, and miscellaneous pieces of equipment. The examples are divided into the main categories 'existing' and 'proposed' and subdivided according to design concept. The final portion of the report consists of the selection of certain equipment subcategories for further consideration and the construction of possible offshore nourishment systems using this selected equipment. A logic network is presented outlining these possible systems, and their projected uses are discussed. Future phases of the research project are outlined. Global warming, melting polar caps, rising sea levels and intensifying wave-current action, factors responsible for the alarming phenomena of coastal erosion on the one hand and adverse environmental impacts and the high cost of 'hard' protection schemes, on the other, have created interest in the detailed examination of the potential and range of applicability of the emerging and promising category of 'soft' shore protection methods. 'Soft' methods such as beach nourishment, submerged breakwaters, artificial reefs, gravity drain systems, floating breakwaters, plantations of hydrophylous shrubs or even dry branches, applied mostly during the past 20 years, are recognised as possessing technical, environmental and financial advantageous properties deserving more attention and further developmental experimentation than has occured hitherto. On the other hand, 'hard' shore protection methods such as seawalls, groins and detached breakwaters, artefacts borrowed from port design and construction technology, no matter how well designed and well implemented they may be, can hardly avoid intensification of the consequential erosive, often devastating, effects on the down-drift shores. Moreover, they often do not constitute environmentally and financially attractive solutions for long stretches of eroding shoreline. Engineers and scientists practising design and implementation of shore defence schemes have been aware for many years of the public demand for improved shore protection technologies. They are encouraging efforts that promise enrichment of those environmentally sound and financially attractive methods that can be safely applied.
