Los humedales proveen variados hábitats a numerosas especies de flora y fauna, previenen la inundación, protegen las costas, recargan acuíferos subterráneos y tienen importancia económica en cuanto a producción alimentaria y energética. Son eslabones de los sistemas migratorios de aves, acogen una gran variedad de especies vegetales y animales, preservan el capital genético, purifican el agua y absorben carbono. Actúan como reguladores del ciclo ecológico entre los cursos fluviales y los acuíferos; el humedal es como una esponja que retiene el exceso de agua durante periodos lluviosos amortiguando el efecto de la erosión (Chaparro, 2003; Rangel, 2003). Desafortunadamente muchos humedales han sido convertidos en campos de cultivo, alterados por construcción de puertos, o rellenados para construir zonas residenciales, industriales o comerciales (Prescott y Tsanis, 1997). Como los ríos y los lagos, los humedales reciben agua y minerales de la lluvia, del agua subterránea y de la escorrentía superficial (Johnston, 1993; Mann y Wetzel, 2000). Los humedales reciben flujos considerables desde el exterior y tienden a retener lo que entra más que a exportar, debido a su morfometría, por esto se dice que su función ecológica es actuar como sumideros de materiales orgánicos e inorgánicos que llegan con las corrientes y que tienden a sedimentarse. Así, la materia orgánica se acumula y produce un incremento en la producción neta que genera un exceso de material vegetal que no es consumido por herbívoros y por lo tanto se convierte en detritus en el fondo del humedal. Aunque la eutrofización es algo natural, los aportes de materia orgánica de las actividades humanas hacen que este proceso se acelere convirtiéndola en uno de los problemas ambientales más generalizados (Reinhardt et al., 2005; Gurkan et al., 2006).

Resumen: Los humedales altoandinos son ecosistemas que proveen bienes y servicios ambientales importantes para el desarrollo de la region. Estos humedales han sido sometidos historicamente a una serie de impactos ambientales que amenazan su integridad fisica y ecologico se propone como una herramienta de manejo ambiental que permite identificar la vulnerabilidad de atributos de los ecosistemas estudiados frente a la ocurrencia de fenomenos amenazantes. Durante el presente estudio, se realizo una adaptacion metodologica para analisis de riesgo ecologico desde una perspectiva ecosistemica a los humedales altoandinos encontrados en el paramillo de santa rosa de cabal. se encontro que la practica ganadera en ecosistemas de paramo genera riesgo principalmente sobre los atributos de provision de recurso hidrico, recarga y descarga de acuiferos y retencio de sedimientos en los humedales altoandinos. En base a un analisis espacial de la distribucion de amenazas, la vulnerabilidad y el riesgo ecologico; con relacion al uso actual e historico del suelo en el area de estudio, se determinan dos grupos de humedales con prioridad para conservacion y se proponen lineamientos generales para su manejo. Se discute en torno al desarrollo metodologico necesario para la replicacion del estudio y la importancia del analisis de riesgo ecologico como herramienta de manejo ambiental para la toma de decisiones sobre manejo de ecosistemas altoandinos.
