Book Description
Read the legendary story of the Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft, seen through the eyes of former RAF captain Scott Bateman 'An engaging and revealing read' - JOHN NICHOL --- Anytime, Anywhere, Anyhow. Whether it’s war, natural disaster, or humanitarian emergency, for over fifty years the RAF’s Hercules force was the first in and last out of any crisis faced by the UK government around the globe. First conceived in the 1950s, the US-built Lockheed C-130 Hercules earned its spurs flying difficult and dangerous missions in the Vietnam War before entering service with air forces around the world. Originally designed as transport aircraft, the Hercules has been pressed into service as an aerial tanker, gunship, spyplane, air-sea rescuer and bomber. Instantly recognisable, it became synonymous with daring special forces missions like the legendary raid in Entebbe in which dozens of hostages were rescued from the clutches of terrorists. In RAF colours it's seen action on every continent on the planet including Antarctica, flying life and death missions in the Falklands, Lebanon, Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, Sudan and all points in between. Former RAF Hercules Captain Scott Bateman opens the cockpit to give an action-packed insider’s account of what it’s like to fly this legendary flying machine in peace and war, and at home and abroad, paying tribute to the remarkable men and women who operated this much loved aircraft, and to those comrades in arms who, in doing so, made the ultimate sacrifice.

Surfing with Sartre

Surfing with Sartre PDF Author: Aaron James
Publisher: Anchor
ISBN: 1101970154
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 354

Book Description
Jean-Paul Sartre once declared waterskiing to be “the ideal limit of aquatic sports.” Aaron James, who is both an avid surfer and a professor of philosophy, vigorously disagrees. In these pages, he presents his surfer’s worldview as a foil to Sartre’s, along the way elucidating such philosophical categories as freedom, being, phenomenology, morality, epistemology, and even the emerging values of what he terms “leisure capitalism.” In developing his unique surfer’s philosophy, he draws from surf culture and lingo—and engages with philosophers from Aristotle to Wittgenstein. In the process, he speaks to those of us in search of personal and social meaning—particularly in our current anxious moment—by way of real, authentic philosophy. In or out of the water.

Trade winds

Trade winds PDF Author: Christiaan De Beukelaer
Publisher: Manchester University Press
ISBN: 152616308X
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 232

Book Description
In 2020, Christiaan De Beukelaer spent 150 days covering 14,000 nautical miles aboard the schooner Avontuur, a hundred-year-old sailing vessel that transports cargo across the Atlantic Ocean. Embarking in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, he wanted to understand the realities of a little-known alternative to the shipping industry on which our global economy relies, and which contributes more carbon emissions than aviation. What started as a three-week stint of fieldwork aboard the ship turned into a five-month journey, as the COVID-19 pandemic forced all borders shut while crossing the ocean, preventing the crew from stepping ashore for months on end. Trade winds engagingly recounts De Beukelaer's life-changing personal odyssey and the complex journey the shipping industry is on to cut its carbon emissions. The Avontuur’s mission remains crucial as ever: the shipping industry urgently needs to stop using fossil fuels, starting today. If we can’t swiftly decarbonise shipping, we can’t solve the climate crisis.

To Follow the Water

To Follow the Water PDF Author: Dallas Murphy
Publisher: Basic Books
ISBN: 0786721650
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 268

Book Description
In To Follow the Water, critically acclaimed author Dallas Murphy artfully recasts the story of human expansion and cultural development with the ocean playing the central role. Applying a novelist's eye for detail and a historian's drive for perspective, he connects the great ages of ocean exploration from Columbus, Magellan, and Cook to the development of modern oceanography. Taking the reader aboard the research vessels Oceanus and Ronald H. Brown, Murphy observes and participates in the practice of ocean science. Whether demonstrating the proper way to don a survival suit in an abandon-ship drill, actually operating oceanographic instruments, or just sitting down for a breakfast of Dramamine and blueberry pancakes, Murphy humorously evokes daily-life aboard these research vessels, unique amalgams of floating laboratories, heavy industry, delicate measurements, and brute force. By following the water, he and the reader discover that ocean currents, flowing on the surface and in the abyss like giant blood vessels, transport heat around the globe, thereby stabilizing and moderating our climate. The Gulf Stream, the best-known ocean current, is but one among many, each inseparable from the others and all inextricably linked to the atmosphere in determining the condition of our climate. There can be no sensible concept of climate that ignores the oceans, yet they have been largely left out of the climate and climate-change discussion. Letting scientists speak for themselves at sea and ashore, Murphy learns that oceanographers are not only observing and explaining the ocean's dynamic, global circulation, but also employing their skills, tools, and techniques to predict climate change. Their brilliant work is largely unknown outside of professional circles even though the role of the ocean is crucial to our understanding of global warming and climate change. To Follow the Water is an enlightening and entertaining voyage of discovery spanning the evolution of our relationship to the ocean, first as an impediment to human ambition, then as the pathway for Western expansion, and now, most important, as a subject of scientific study with immediate relevance to our future.

God's Backyard Pets and the Changing Seasons

God's Backyard Pets and the Changing Seasons PDF Author: Jennifer Smiley
Publisher: Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
ISBN: 1685170838
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 467

Book Description
In 2007, the author took over the complete care and feeding of the birds, squirrels, and chipmunks. In about 2004, she had inherited the care and feeding from her mother who had broken her hip and then became sick with heart problems. When her mother passed away in 2007, there was not much there in the way of backyard pets, but over the years, it became built up and quite nice. The author bought a digital camera in 2010, which made the possibility of winter, spring, summer, and autumn photographs possible. Over the years, the number of pets has gone up and down, and the decorations have gone up and down, but the author's love and devotion has remained the same. The author already owned the rabbit, mice, and hamsters back in 2004, and they are always included in her writings of God's backyard pets. Occasionally, we go out and about the neighborhood for it is quite scenic and describe other places such as Mary's Pond, Leonard's Pond, and the scenic trail at Fairhaven for Budgie, the author's bunny always came along for walks or bicycle rides or kayak rafting and so too the mice and the hamsters. The seasons play a large part in the lives of the pets, and we have faithfully marked every winter, spring, summer, and autumn. Being so close to the land and to the water and what's going on with the pets, it's only natural to feel the joys and woes of every season. See the wonder of the squirrels, chipmunks, birds, mice, hamsters, and bunnies though the miracle of each season. Follow the joy of Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving through the eyes of God and the author. These writings are specifically from 2015 to 2019. The author did not start with the intention of marking every season and holiday. It just evolved naturally from wanting to further document the backyard lives of their pets. And to do so, in a way that would make a difference. This book is dedicated to Budgie, the author's number one pet, and for whom she took on the project of the backyard pets in the first place. She always did believe. Whether a dozen pets or one pet, we have enjoyed every minute of it!
