Book Description
Excerpt from Sale Number 1804 on Public Exhibition From Sunday, February Third: Early American Furniture, Glass, China, Prints, Hooked Rugs and Diverse Objects of Art From the Collection of Mrs. Laurie E. Post of New York City and Other Consignors Regions: New England States, New York State, Penn sylvania-german, Southern States. Different types of styles have been identified for the different regions. Another classi fication might be of interest, at least as useful andinteresting a classification as to the social status of the owners of the furniture: furniture of the landed gentry of the South, furniture of the rich merchant, and shipowners of the big ports on the East coast, furniture from the cabins and first settlements of the pioneers. But among all these types, perhaps the most American and the most interesting is that Of the well to-do middleclass in the middle-sized towns, inland in the Eastern States. This furniture is particularly interesting as it reflects the life of a class that has continued to the present day almost without a change. The tidy homes in these mid dle - sized towns of to - day are still in the same old brick houses with white marble sills and green shutters, as they were one hundred and fifty years ago. And the well-boiled tea is still poured into the same kind of large cups. While tradition simmered along like the above - mentioned tea, dur ing the lgth century, in the last ten years these sturdy New England families have become conscious of their tradition and also attentive to the old pieces of furniture that might be for gotten in an attic somewhere in the neighborhood.
