Styrene-butadiene Latex Modifiers for Bridge Deck Overlay Concrete

Styrene-butadiene Latex Modifiers for Bridge Deck Overlay Concrete PDF Author: Kenneth C. Clear
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Bridges, Concrete
Languages : en
Pages : 132

Book Description
Styrene-butadiene (S/B) latex modified concrete overlays are being used to protect new bridge decks from rapid deicer-borne chloride intrusion and also in bridge deck rehabilitation efforts. The purposes of this research were to evaluate several commercially-available S/B latex modifiers for bridge deck overlay concrete; and to develop chemical specifications for the material, a prequalification program to permit evaluation of other S/B latex modifiers which become available, and a certification program to insure the user receives a prequalified product. The chemical and physical properties of the latex emulsions were studied (percent solids, percent butadiene, particle size, surface tension, viscosity, etc.) and the material from each manufacturer was finger printed using infrared spectroscopy. The physical properties of concrete made with each material were also determined (workability, strength-compressive, flexural and bond, freeze-thaw and scaling resistance, and chloride permeability).

Handbook of Polymer-Modified Concrete and Mortars

Handbook of Polymer-Modified Concrete and Mortars PDF Author: Yoshihiko Ohama
Publisher: William Andrew
ISBN: 0815517696
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 247

Book Description
Mortar and concrete made with portland cement has been a popular construction material in the world for the past 170 years or more. However, cement mortar and concrete have some disadvantages such as delayed hardening, low tensile strength, large drying shrinkage and low chemical resistance. To reduce these disadvantages, polymers have been utilized as an additive.Polymer-modified or polymer cement mortar (PCM) and concrete (PCC) are the materials which are made by partially replacing the cement hydrate binders of conventional cement mortar or concrete, with polymers. This book deals with the principles of polymer modification for cement composites, the process technology, properties and applications of the polymer-modified mortar and concrete, and special polymer-modified systems such as M DF cement, antiwashout underwater concrete, polymer-ferrocement, and artificial I wood. The polymeric admixtures or cement modifiers include latexes or emulsions, redispersible polymer powders, water-soluble polymers, liquid resins and monomers. This book describes the current knowledge and information of polymer-modified mortars and concretes, and discusses or reviews the following items in detail:1. Principles of polymer modification for cement composites.2. Process technology of polymer-modified mortars and concretes.3. Properties of polymer-modified mortars and concretes.4. Applications of polymer-modified mortars and concretes.5. Special polymer-modified systems such as MDF cements, antiwashout underwater concretes, polymer-ferrocements, and artificial woods.

Bridge Deck Concrete Volume Change

Bridge Deck Concrete Volume Change PDF Author: Andrei Ramniceanu
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Concrete
Languages : en
Pages : 38

Book Description
Concrete structures such as bridge decks, with large surface area relative to volume, shrink and crack, thus reducing service life performance and increasing operation costs. The project evaluated the early, first 24 hours, and long-term, 180 days, shrinkage of Virginia Department of Transportation overlay and A4 general bridge deck concrete mixtures. A modified ASTM C157 prism was developed to measure the early-age shrinkage, as was a unique hygral cylinder test. Long-term shrinkage was measured using the ASTM C157 prism test. In addition, scaled bridge deck overlay specimens were cast to assess cracking potential. Overlay mixtures tested were latex modified mixtures using portland cement, Type K cement, an expansive mixture and portland cement, fly ash and microsilica blend. Deck concrete mixtures evaluated were fly ash, slag, Type K cement and an expansive mixture. Recommendations for controlling shrinkage at 3, 7, and 28 days were developed for all overlay and A4 concrete mixtures.

Performance and Constructability of Silica Fume Bridge Deck Overlays

Performance and Constructability of Silica Fume Bridge Deck Overlays PDF Author: Gerald G. Miller
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Bridges
Languages : en
Pages : 478

Book Description
The effects of construction practices and material properties on the performance of concrete bridge decks are evaluated. Emphasis is placed on comparing bridge decks with silica fume and conventional concrete overlays and determining if the silica fume overlays commonly used on bridges in Kansas are performing at a level that justifies the extra cost and construction precautions. Forty continuous steel girder bridges, 20 with silica fume overlays, 16 with conventional overlays and four with monolithic bridge decks are included in the study.
