Submerged Landscapes of the European Continental Shelf

Submerged Landscapes of the European Continental Shelf PDF Author: Nicholas C. Flemming
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118927508
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 555

Book Description
Quaternary Paleoenvironments examines the drowned landscapes exposed as extensive and attractive territory for prehistoric human settlement during the Ice Ages of the Pleistocene, when sea levels dropped to 120m-135m below their current levels. This volume provides an overview of the geological, geomorphological, climatic and sea-level history of the European continental shelf as a whole, as well as a series of detailed regional reviews for each of the major sea basins. The nature and variable attractions of the landscapes and resources available for human exploitation are examined, as are the conditions under which archaeological sites and landscape features are likely to have been preserved, destroyed or buried by sediment during sea-level rise. The authors also discuss the extent to which we can predict where to look for drowned landscapes with the greatest chance of success, with frequent reference to examples of preserved prehistoric sites in different submerged environments. Quaternary Paleoenvironments will be of interest to archaeologists, geologists, marine scientists, palaeoanthropologists, cultural heritage managers, geographers, and all those with an interest in the drowned landscapes of the continental shelf.

Climate Development and History of the North Atlantic Realm

Climate Development and History of the North Atlantic Realm PDF Author: Gerold Wefer

Book Description
The global environment is changing rapidly under the impact of human activities, and an important element of this change is related to global c1imate modification. Can the study of c1imate and history help in devising strategies for coping with this change? What might be the type of information most useful in this context? What are the pitfalls awaiting the unwary? These are the kinds of questions that led us to bring together experts from the natural and social sci ences with a strong interest in history, to promote discussion between workers in different disciplines by focussing on a common topic of great interest to society. The meeting was arranged in the framework of a "Hanse Conference" within the interdisciplinary program of the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg, a foundation set up to promote interdisciplinary studies in collaboration between the universities ofBremen and Oldenburg. The aim ofthe Hanse Conferences in general is to provide opportunities for experts from different fields of the sciences and humanities to come together and explore the larger framework oftopics of common interest. What unites the partici pants is their desire to look over the fence to neighboring disciplines. Young colleagues who wish to build an interdisciplinary career are particularly welcome. In the Hanse Conference on Climate and History, we have endeavoured to build bridges between the c1imate sciences and the sociological sciences concemed with environmental impacts on human activities. The geological sciences, we feIt, are especially well suited to the purpose because they al ready comprise historical aspects.

The Wadden Sea Ecosystem

The Wadden Sea Ecosystem PDF Author: Sabine Dittmann
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642600972
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 443

Book Description
The results of an interdisciplinary research project on stability mechanisms and processes in the Wadden Sea ecosystem. The book describes distribution patterns of abiotic and biotic components over space and time and their regeneration following experimentally induced and natural disturbances -- analysed with multivariate statistics and ecological models. Recommendations for future research and consideration of stability mechanisms for the management of a dynamic system are also given.

Origin of the Dutch coastal landscape

Origin of the Dutch coastal landscape PDF Author: Peter Vos
Publisher: Barkhuis
ISBN: 9492444429
Category : Social Science

Pages : 373

Book Description
The topic of this book is the Origin of the Dutch coastal landscape during the Holocene. The landscape evolution is visualized in series of palaeogeographical maps and the driving mechanisms behind the environmental changes are discussed. The practice to make palaeogeographical map reconstructions in the Netherlands developed after the Second World War when a lot of regional geological and soil scientific mapping programs were carried out by government institutions and universities. These maps show when and how the surveyed sediments were formed. The palaeogeographical map reconstructions are subsequently used for the understanding and modeling of the long-term coastal evolution, coastal-management issues, landscape-archaeological purposes and for education and public information reasons. Geoarchaeological investigations play an important role in this study. Geological and palaeo-environmental data from archaeological excavations (‘key sites') provided essential information for the palaeolandscape reconstructions. In the presented regional- and local-case studies of this book, examples of these sites are shown.
