Book Description
A computer simulation was conducted to investigate the effects of both linear and parabolic tooth profile modification on the dynamic response of low-contact-ratio spur gears. The effect of the total amount of modification and the length of the modification zone were studied at various loads and speeds to find the optimal profile modification for minimal dynamic loading. Design charts consisting of normalized maximum dynamic load curves were generated for gear systems operated at various loads and with different tooth profile modification. An optimum profile modification can be determined from these design charts to minimize the dynamic loads of spur gear systems. Keywords: Spur gears, Gear teeth, Gear noise, Gearboxes, Dynamic load, Profile modification, Transmission error, Gear design. (SDW).

Book Description
The dynamic load of gears with regular type of spacing error such as full-sine and half-sine type has been analyzed in several previous research works. In this study, the irregular type of tooth spacing error is incorporated with the regular type ones to determine their effect on gear dynamic response. Linear and Parabolic tooth profile modification are applied to evaluate their influence on the dynamic loads of gear systems with regular or irregular tooth spacing errors. All dynamic analyses are conducted using the NASA gear dynamics code, DANST program. The objective of this study is to examine the relationship between gear dynamic load, type and extent of tooth spacing error, and profile modifications. Results obtained from this study can provide proper tooth profile design to minimize the dynamic response of the spur gear systems for a better transmission design.

Influence of Linear Profile Modification and Loading Conditions on the Dynamic Tooth Load and Stress of High Contact Ratio Gears

Influence of Linear Profile Modification and Loading Conditions on the Dynamic Tooth Load and Stress of High Contact Ratio Gears PDF Author:

Book Description
This paper presents a computer simulation for the dynamic response of high-contact-ratio spur gear transmissions. High contact-ratio spur gear transmissions. High contact ratio gears have the potential to produce lower dynamic tooth loads and minimum root stress but they can be sensitive to tooth profile errors. The analysis presented in this paper examines various profile modifications under realistic loading conditions. The effect of these modifications on the dynamic load (force) between mating gear teeth and the dynamic root stress is presented. Since the contact stress is dependent on the dynamic load, minimizing dynamic loads will also minimize contact stresses. This paper shows that the combination of profile modification and the applied load (torque) carried by a gear system has a significant influence on gear dynamics. The ideal modification at one value of applied load will not be the best solution for a different load. High-contact-ratio gears were found to require less modification than standard low-contact-ratio gears.

Book Description
One of the major concern in the design of power transmission gear is the reduction of gear dynamic load. Research on gear noise and vibration has revealed that the basic mechanics of noise generated from gearing is gear box vibration excited by the dynamic load. This thesis studies the effect of tooth spacing errors on the dynamic load of high contact ratio spur gear subjected to unideal loading conditions. Spur gear is the simplest kind gear available. Spur gears have their teeth parallel to the axis of rotation and are used for transmitting power between two parallel shafts. Three types of spacing error distribution are defined and studied: type I (short span), type II (medium span), and type III (long span). Three different kinds of modification have been considered: linear, parabolic 1, parabolic II. The range of loading is changed from 0.75 times to 1.25 times of design load which is 2200 lb.-inch. A computer simulation has been conducted to investigate the effectiveness of profile modification for reducing dynamic loads in high-contact-ratio gears with different tooth spacing errors. The simulation examined varying amplitudes of spacing errors and differences in the span of teeth over which the errors occur. The dynamic analysis was performed using a revised version of a NASA gear dynamics code, modified to take into consideration the tooth spacing errors in the dynamic analysis. The findings of this study can be used to design robust tooth profile modification for improving the dynamic performance of high-contact-ratio gear sets with different tooth spacing errors when subjected to unideal loading condition.
