Book Description
Excerpt from The American Penny Magazine, and Family Newspaper, 1846, Vol. 2: With Numerous Illustrative and Ornamental Wood Engravings, for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, and Moral and Religious Principles The Areoi Society was a strange and detestable association, formed on the most immoral principles, and for the perpetration of the greatest crimes. It had existed from time immemorial, embraced a large portion of the people, and exerted a most baneful influence. It seems indeed wonderful that any remains of decency could have sub sisted in a nation where so degrading and subversive an institution had a footing. In some of its principal features the Areoi may be compared with customs known among many of the tribes of Western Africa, and in some other parts of the world, as well as with the Bacchanals of the R0 mans. Strange as it may seem, however, even that rofl' ate institution soon began to saccum beore the influence of the Gospel, and was finally annihilated. The following is a description of one of the numerous and interesting scenes which occurred during the early days of Christi. Suity in the Islands. India in the American Imaginary, 1780s–1880s

India in the American Imaginary, 1780s–1880s PDF Author: Anupama Arora
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319623346
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 302

Book Description
This book seeks to frame the “the idea of India” in the American imaginary within a transnational lens that is attentive to global flows of goods, people, and ideas within the circuits of imperial and maritime economies in nineteenth century America (roughly 1780s-1880s). This diverse and interdisciplinary volume – with essays by upcoming as well as established scholars – aims to add to an understanding of the fast changing terrain of economic, political, and cultural life in the US as it emerged from being a British colony to having imperial ambitions of its own on the global stage. The essays trace, variously, the evolution of the changing self-image of a nation embodying a surprisingly cosmopolitan sensibility, open to different cultural values and customs in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century to one that slowly adopted rigid and discriminatory racial and cultural attitudes spawned by the widespread missionary activities of the ABCFM and the fierce economic pulls and pushes of American mercantilism by the end of the nineteenth century. The different uses of India become a way of refining an American national identity.

The Quote Verifier

The Quote Verifier PDF Author: Ralph Keyes
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
ISBN: 1429906170
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 416

Book Description
Our language is full of hundreds of quotations that are often cited but seldom confirmed. Ralph Keyes's The Quote Verifier considers not only classic misquotes such as "Nice guys finish last," and "Play it again, Sam," but more surprising ones such as "Ain't I a woman?" and "Golf is a good walk spoiled," as well as the origins of popular sayings such as "The opera ain't over till the fat lady sings," "No one washes a rented car," and "Make my day." Keyes's in-depth research routinely confounds widespread assumptions about who said what, where, and when. Organized in easy-to-access dictionary form, The Quote Verifier also contains special sections highlighting commonly misquoted people and genres, such as Yogi Berra and Oscar Wilde, famous last words, and misremembered movie lines. An invaluable resource for not just those with a professional need to quote accurately, but anyone at all who is interested in the roots of words and phrases, The Quote Verifier is not only a fascinating piece of literary sleuthing, but also a great read.

Chaplains of the Revolutionary War

Chaplains of the Revolutionary War PDF Author: Jack Darrell Crowder
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476630712
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 190

Book Description
"There is a time to preach and a time to fight. And now is the time to fight." With those words, the Rev. John Muhlenberg stepped from his pulpit, removed his clerical robe--revealing the uniform of a Colonial officer--and marched off to war. Many of the ministers who became chaplains in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War carried muskets while ministering to the spiritual needs of the troops. Their eyewitness accounts describe the battles of Lexington and Concord, life on a prison ship, the burning of New York City, the Battle of Rhode Island, the execution of Major Andre, and many other events.
