Né en 1950, Jacques Bailly a consacré trente années d'activité professionnelle à une passion, celle des oeuvres qui ont marqué l'histoire picturale du XXe siècle. Dès 1972, il ouvre sa première galerie à Paris avec une exposition d'André Masson qu'il organise grâce au soutien de Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler. Depuis lors, son intérêt pour les figures essentielles de la peinture moderne ne s'est plus démenti. Les peintres du début du siècle comme ceux des années 50 comptent parmi les créateurs qu'il aime et veut faire apprécier du public. Jacques Bailly développe une vision picturale élargie et éclectique qui le conduit, dans son rôle de directeur de galerie, à refuser de se cantonner dans des choix d'œuvres convenus et répétitifs. Cette passion de la modernité originale et fondatrice l'amène à nouveau, aujourd'hui, à sortir des sentiers trop souvent parcourus et explorés : ce catalogue raisonné de l'œuvre de Jean Dufy (1888-1964) s'inscrit dans cette démarche et répond à une préoccupation constante de Jacques Bailly, désireux, depuis de nombreuses années, de réaliser ce projet. Loué par la critique française des années 20 et 30, admiré par les plus prestigieux musées des Etats-Unis qui l'ont intégré à leurs collections, à l'image de l'Art Institute of Chicago ou du MoMA, apprécié par de grandes galeries américaines qui lui ont consacré de nombreuses expositions, Jean Dufy a connu dans la mémoire collective une forme relative et passagère d'oubli. "This is the colorful memoir of the brilliant, eccentric Parisian art dealer Berthe Weill (1865-1951), who championed many of the emerging masters of modern art in the first part of the twentieth century. In this, she was radical and pioneering. She made the first sales in Paris for Picasso and Matisse, and she gave Modigliani the only solo show in his lifetime. Weill also promoted the work of women artists, and her salty memoir (originally published in 1933) details her struggles against sexism and anti-Semitism in the Parisian art world.
