This report summarizes the recent work done to more fully understand the physical metallurgy of beryllium. A review of work on purification of beryllium, which has yielded high-quality single crystals, was made. The basic deformation properties of beryllium have thus been more clearly defined. The effects of certain alloying elements and impurities are also discussed. Deformation modes in polycrystalline beryllium are discussed based on the results of studies of single crystals. The texture developed in polycrystalline beryllium by fabrication and resulting effects on mechanical properties are dealt with, as well as fracture modes in single-crystal and polycrystalline beryllium. Bend-plane splitting is the method suggested for initiation of fracture in beryllium. Some effects of the distribution of impurities as a result of thermal treatment on the mechanical properties are cited. Since grain size is an important factor in determining properties, recrystallization and grain-growth phenomena are covered. The physical-metallurgical phenomena which contribute to the properties and fabricability of commercial products are discussed. (Author).

The ductile-brittle transition temperature of beryllium at various strain values has been represented by an analytical expression and is dependent on a number of material parameters. This theory is in agreement with grain size and strain rate dependence of the transition temperature which may possibly be lowered by such methods as establishing preferred orientation of grains to alter the ductility. The hardness-grain size relation has been studied for beryllium and the hardness values of individual grains supports the metallographic observations of anisotropic yielding and flow. (Author).

An investigation was made of the factors controlling the ductile-brittle behavior of two grades of commercial purity beryllium, Brush QMV and Pechiney CR. Tensile tests were made on randomly oriented samples at temperatures from 23C to 500C. Extrusions were tested in the longitudinal and transverse directions in the range -195C to 200C. Three grain sizes of each material were investigated, and comparisons made between specimens tested in the aged and unaged condition. The aging treatment was 900C for 6 hours followed by 48 hours at 700C. Mechanical properties of both materials were very similar after this heat treatment and no advantage could be claimed for the higher purity Pechiney beryllium. Aging reduced the amount of impurities in solid solution and contributed to improved ductility in certain temperature ranges. The ductile-brittle transition could not be described in terms of the dislocation pileup theories for body-centered-cubic metals. A theory of the ductilebrittle transition based on the thermally activated cross slip of screw dislocations from the basal plane into pyramidal or prismatic planes was proposed. The data could be described reasonably well in terms of this theory.
