Book Description
According to this study, the spectator is currently acquiring new capacities to follow and to assimilate the moving image. In the last fifteen years, designers in the iconosphere have continued to make progress with the development and expansion of the media of visual narration. This advance is not only the result of past artistic experiments, but is above all rooted in such phenomena as the adaptation of urban populations to dynamic iconography, the proliferation of visual information, the emergence of interactive practices, such as channel surfing, the Internet search, mobile phone interfaces, as well as the visual interfaces for operating vehicles and other machines. These new ways of consuming images and sounds have fueled an expansion of new multi-screen designs that will gradually make the dark theater projection and the single-screen device obsolete. This study offers a semi-comprehensive investigation of these phenomena, anchored in the epistemology of cognitive science, providing theoretical explanations combined with analyses of recent and historical works and accompanied by the reflections and testimonies of artists.

Puzzling Stories
Author: Steven Willemsen
Publisher: Berghahn Books
ISBN: 1800735928
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 408
Book Description
Many films and novels defy our ability to make sense of the plot. While puzzling storytelling, strange incongruities, inviting enigmas and persistent ambiguities have been central to the effects of many literary and cinematic traditions, a great deal of contemporary films and television series bring such qualities to the mainstream—but wherein lies the attractiveness of perplexing works of fiction? This collected volume offers the first comprehensive, multidisciplinary, and trans-medial approach to the question of cognitive challenge in narrative art, bringing together psychological, philosophical, formal-historical, and empirical perspectives from leading scholars across these fields.

The Virtual Window
Author: Anne Friedberg
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 0262512505
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 372
Book Description
From the Renaissance idea of the painting as an open window to the nested windows and multiple images on today's cinema, television, and computer screens: a cultural history of the metaphoric, literal, and virtual window. As we spend more and more of our time staring at the screens of movies, televisions, computers, and handheld devices—"windows" full of moving images, texts, and icons—how the world is framed has become as important as what is in the frame. In The Virtual Window, Anne Friedberg examines the window as metaphor, as architectural component, and as an opening to the dematerialized reality we see on the screen. In De pictura (1435), Leon Battista Alberti famously instructed painters to consider the frame of the painting as an open window. Taking Alberti's metaphor as her starting point, Friedberg tracks shifts in the perspectival paradigm as she gives us histories of the architectural window, developments in glass and transparency, and the emerging apparatuses of photography, cinema, television, and digital imaging. Single-point perspective—Alberti's metaphorical window—has long been challenged by modern painting, modern architecture, and moving-image technologies. And yet, notes Friedberg, for most of the twentieth century the dominant form of the moving image was a single image in a single frame. The fractured modernism exemplified by cubist painting, for example, remained largely confined to experimental, avant-garde work. On the computer screen, however, where multiple 'windows' coexist and overlap, perspective may have met its end. In this wide-ranging book, Friedberg considers such topics as the framed view of the camera obscura, Le Corbusier's mandates for the architectural window, Eisenstein's opinions on the shape of the movie screen, and the multiple images and nested windows commonly displayed on screens today. The Virtual Window proposes a new logic of visuality, framed and virtual: an architecture not only of space but of time.

Non-Cinema
Author: William Brown
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1501327267
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 310
Book Description
Non-Cinema: Global Digital Film-making and the Multitude provides an original film-philosophy through which to understand low budget digital filmmaking from around the globe. It draws upon a wide range of western and non-western philosophers, physicists, theorists of 'Third Cinema,' and contemporary film theorists and film-philosophers in order to argue that the future of cinema lies at the margins, in the extreme, the overlooked and the under-funded – the sort that distributors, exhibitors and audiences would not consider to be cinema at all, hence "non-cinema." Analysing numerous films, William Brown argues that contemporary low-budget digital cinema is also through its digital form a political cinema that suggests that we are not detached observers of the world, but entangled participants therewith. Non-Cinema constructs this argument by looking at work by established filmmakers like Jean-Luc Godard, Abbas Kiarostami, Jafar Panahi and Michael Winterbottom, as well as lesser known work from places as diverse as Asia, the Middle East, Europe, the Americas and Africa.
