Models to simulate individual driver behavior offer the possibility to investigate human-machine interaction in early stages of driver assistance system development. Many driver behavior models were published with regard to the simulation of longitudinal and lateral vehicle control, but the number of detailed models which simulate gap acceptance behavior preceeding a lane change (overtaking) maneuver is comparably small. In this thesis, the influence of different rear view mirror types on driver's gap acceptance behavior during a simulated lane change scenario on a two-lane German Autobahn was investigated and a driver behavior model was built to simulate this behavior. Individual behavior differences were also considered. As a first step, a simulation of different rear view mirror types (Planar, Convex C20 / C14) was implemented in a research driving simulator. Afterwards, two driving simulator studies were conducted: 1) To validate the implementation of the three mirror types, the results of a distance estimation study were compared against already published field studies with real mirror. 2) Results of a lane change study were then used for the development of a driver behavior model to simulate gap acceptance behavior: to estimate gap size and closing speed of approaching vehicles from behind, the model relies on visual angles and their rate of change which are well known concepts in psychology of visual perception. engl.

The purpose of MABS-2000 was to investigate and develop the synergy - tween software engineering for multi-agent systems and agent-based social s- ulation. The papers included in the MABS-2000 workshop were selected either because they explore how agent interaction can be used to build multi-agent s- tems or they o?er examples of problem-oriented (rather than technique-oriented) systems. No paper was selected if it speci?ed a model or an issue to make it ?t a previously chosen technique. All of the papers in the volume have been reviewed and in many cases revised since the workshop. Two papers (by Edmonds and by Hales)as well as the editorial introduction have been added to those accepted for the workshop. Driving behavior is significantly affected by the presence of exclusive lanes. Particularly, unlimited access to exclusive lanes result significant amount of special type of lane-changing actions. The objective of this thesis is to develop an improved lane-changing model that has a generalized structure and is flexible enough to capture the lane-changing behavior in all situations including the presence of unlimited access exclusive lanes. A new lane-changing model with explicit choice of target lane is proposed in this regard. The target lane is the lane the driver perceives as the best to be in taking a wide range of factors and goals into account. The direction of the immediate lane change is based on the choice of this target lane rather than myopic evaluation of adjacent lanes. A lane change occurs in the direction implied by the chosen target lane depending upon gap availability. The parameters of the model are jointly estimated with detailed vehicle trajectory data and calibrated for a situation with unlimited access High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane. Estimation results show that the target lane choice is affected by lane-specific attributes, such as average speed and density, variables that relate to the path plan and the interactions of the vehicle with other vehicles surrounding it. The model is validated and compared with an existing lane-changing model using a microscopic traffic simulator in an HOV lane situation. The results indicate that the proposed model is significantly better than the previous model.
