My dissertation, "The Dress and the Colonial Body in Transatlantic Texts, 1767-1853," argues that the appearance and presentation of women in colonial spaces is used to make colonizing powers visually explicit. This project analyzes the presentation of colonial bodies through the garment of the dress, a piece of clothing which both constructs and reifies gender. I argue that colonial subjects are visually defined, and racial categories are both constructed and stabilized, through the garment of the dress. Eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century literature is particularly relevant for an analysis of dress because emerging fashions or habits of dress are directly linked to social and economic events in the larger Atlantic world. The colonization of the new world, as well as the implementation of the institution of slavery, are both political realities which sought to stabilize the categories of gender and race by restricting or legislating the clothing practices of colonized people. Tracing sartorial depictions through a number of visual and textual mediums, I begin by reading narratives of Pocahontas and the novel The Female American (1767). Other chapters read the novel A Woman of Color: A Tale (1808) depicting a biracial Jamaican woman visiting London, and the textile osnaburg and the novel Clotel; or, The President's Daughter (1853). Through an analysis of literary texts and archival materials, I reveal the dress and dresses of colonial women as performative constructions and attempted stabilizations of the categories of gender and race that highlight the extension of the colonial project to the body of the colonial subject.

The Nigerian and West African practice of aso ebi fashion invokes notions of wealth and group dynamics in social gatherings. Okechukwu Nwafor’s volume Aso ebi investigates the practice in the cosmopolitan urban setting of Lagos, and argues that the visual and consumerist hype typical of the late capitalist system feeds this unique fashion practice. The book suggests that dress, fashion, aso ebi, and photography engender a new visual culture that largely reflects the economics of mundane living. Nwafor examines the practice’s societal dilemma, whereby the solidarity of aso ebi is dismissed by many as an ephemeral transaction. A circuitous transaction among photographers, fashion magazine producers, textile merchants, tailors, and individual fashionistas reinvents aso ebi as a product of cosmopolitan urban modernity. The results are a fetishization of various forms of commodity culture, personality cults through mass followership, the negotiation of symbolic power through mass-produced images, exchange value in human relationships through gifts, and a form of exclusion achieved through digital photo editing. Aso ebi has become an essential part of Lagos cosmopolitanism: as a rising form of a unique visual culture it is central to the unprecedented spread of a unique West African fashion style that revels in excessive textile overflow. This extreme dress style is what an individual requires to transcend the lack imposed by the chaos of the postcolonial city.

Archaeology often struggles in envisioning real people behind the world of material objects it studies. Even when dealing with skeletal remains archaeologists routinely reduce them to long lists of figures and attributes. Such a fragmentation of past subjects and their bodies, if analytically necessary, is hardly satisfactory. While material culture is the main archaeological proxy to real people in the past, the absence of past bodies has been chronic in archaeological writings. At the same time, these past bodies in archaeology are omnipresent. Bodily matters are tangible in the archaeological record in a way most other theoretical centralities never appear to be. Ancient bodies surround us, in representations, in burials, in the remains of food preparation, cooking and consumption, in hands holding tools, in joint efforts of many individual bodies who built architecture and monuments. This collection of papers is a reaction to decades of the body's invisibility. It raises the body as the central topic in the study of past societies, researching its appearance in a wide variety of regional contexts and across vast spans of archaeological time. Contributions in this volume range from the deep Epi-Palaeolithic past of the Near East, through the European Neolithic and Bronze Age, Classical Greece and Late Medieval England, to pre-Columbian Central America, post-contact North America, and the most recent conflicts in the Balkans. In all these case studies, the materiality of the body is centre stage. Possibilities are highlighted for future study: by putting the body at the forefront of these archaeological studies an attempt is made to provoke the imagination and map out new territories.
