Dreams and Scripture in Luke-Acts

Dreams and Scripture in Luke-Acts PDF Author: Bart J. Koet
Publisher: Paulist Press
ISBN: 9789042917507
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 250

Book Description
The studies (seven articles in English and two in German) presented in this volume will give some insight into Luke's way of dealing with certain literary traditions available to him and to his audience. They try to determine something of the relation between the Luke-Acts in general or a special passage in particular and the biblical associations in his Hellenistic environment. Such is the limited goal of this collection of essays; nothing more, nothing less. If one theme should prevail in this volume, it might be the connection between interpretation of Scripture and the phenomenon of dreams. In some of the articles, the author deals quite explicitly with the combination of dream and Scripture, in others only with the interpretation of Scripture. When dealing with the interpretation of Scripture in other articles, the connection with other types of divine communication is sometimes mentioned in passing. The essays collected here help readers find their way through the endless fabric of Luke's interpretation of the events concerning Jesus and his disciples in the light of biblical and classical wisdom traditions.

Dreams and Spirituality

Dreams and Spirituality PDF Author: Kate Adams
Publisher: Canterbury Press
ISBN: 1848257317
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 277

Book Description
This handbook provides a comprehensive overview of the nature of dreams as understood from a range of diverse perspectives, and their relevance for pastoral care. Its approach is both systematic and practical, enabling ministers, spiritual directors and counsellors to understand the nature of dreams and the role they play in the lives of those in their pastoral care. Dreams are a universal phenomenon and have a long established role in religious faith and practice. Yet many pastors feel ill-equipped to deal with this area of human consciousness. In this guide, twenty-two contributors from a wide variety of disciplines explore the potential of dreams to bring about renewal, healing, reconciliation and encounter with the transcendent. • Part 1 examines dreams from theological, psychological and cultural anthropological perspectives. • Part 2 explores the theme of dreams and religion through empirical data, theory and reflections. • Part 3 considers dreams and the practice of pastoral care for a variety of settings and groups.

God and Dreams

God and Dreams PDF Author: John Pratt Bingham
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1606086677
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 185

Book Description
At one time when an individual wanted a direct, personal experience of God that person turned to his or her dreams. The early third century Christian defender of the faith, Tertullian, observed, "Is it not known to all people that the dream is the most usual way that God reveals himself to man?" Yet by the eleventh century, King William II of England states, "They are not good Christians that regard dreams." Why did this reversal of opinion occur, not only in Christian thinking, but in Jewish and Islamic attitudes also? God and Dreams: Is There a Connection? traces the historic connection between God and dreams and examines why this shift happened. While particular attention is given to Jewish, Christian, and Islamic thought, several secular disciplines are discussed also. After investigating the different points of view, an argument is made that the connection between God and dreams still exists.

Dreaming in Christianity and Islam

Dreaming in Christianity and Islam PDF Author: Kelly Bulkeley
Publisher: Rutgers University Press
ISBN: 0813548241
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 281

Book Description
Throughout history to the present day, religion has ideologically fueled wars, conquests, and persecutions. Christianity and Islam, the world's largest and geopolitically powerful faiths, are often positioned as mortal enemies locked in an apocalyptic "clash of civilizations." Rarely are similarities addressed. Dreaming in Christianity and Islam, the first book to explore dreaming in these religions through original essays, fills this void. The editors reach a plateau by focusing on how studying dreams reveals new aspects of social and political reality. International scholars document the impact of dreams on sacred texts, mystical experiences, therapeutic practices, and doctrinal controversies.
