Book Description
Governor Grover Cleveland stared in disbelief at the front page of the Buffalo Telegraph. Just ten days earlier he had received the Democratic Party's nomination for president, and given his reputation for unwavering honesty, he knew that he had a real chance to win. His Republican opponent, the notoriously corrupt James G. Blaine a man who would soon become known as Blaine, Blaine, James G. Blaine, the Continental liar from the state of Maine! was vulnerable. If Cleveland managed to parlay his sterling reputation into a victory in November, he would be the first Democrat elected since before the Civil War. But now, as Cleveland stared in disgust at the newspaper sitting on his desk, victory looked a lot less likely. A TERRIBLE TALE, screamed the morning's headline. A DARK CHAPTER IN A PUBLIC MAN'S HISTORY. The Telegraph's article told the story of Maria Halpin, a widow in Cleveland's hometown of Buffalo, who had a child named Oscar Folsom Cleveland. Cleveland, a bachelor, had never acknowledged that his former lover's child was his. After all, several of his drinking buddies had also shared Maria's bed could he really be sure of his paternity? But those friends were all married, so Cleveland had agreed to give the child his last name and his financial support. When the boy was sent to an orphanage after Maria's excessive drinking and deteriorating emotional state led to her stay in a mental institution, Cleveland had dutifully paid the orphanage bill of five dollars a week. Now, in the midst of Cleveland's presidential campaign, the nine-year-old child's very existence threatened to derail his White House hopes unless he could find a way to turn this crisis into an opportunity.

Today only, get a summary and analysis of this 1# Amazon bestseller for just $2.99. Regularly priced at $9.99. Read on your PC, Mac, smart phone, tablet or Kindle device This book begins with an expose of Grover Cleveland who was known for being an honest politician during his presidency in the 1880's. Although he was generally an honest president as well, there happened to be an incident during which he disappeared aboard a friend's yacht for four days and lied about the reason for his absence. Moving on to the next story, we learn about Edwin Howard Armstrong, also known as The Major, who is just about to jump from the 13th floor of a New York City apartment block at the end of January 1954. He had left a note that calculated the odds of his body being smashed upon impact with the ground below. He took the time to dress in attire which people would recognize him in for identification purposes and then moved over to the window. This part of the book does not tell whether or not Armstrong actually jumped. First, we are told the race to discover, decode and understand the new phenomenon of radio would be run by Armstrong, David Sarnoff and Lee de Forest. Abruptly, the narrative jumps back in time some forty eight years as we join a much younger Armstrong being chastised by his mother for not coming inside when she ordered. The young Armstrong is, we discover, sitting in a chair hanging from ropes attached to his newest and best hundred foot antenna enjoying the feel of the wind at such a height. Even at this young age, Armstrong was considered gifted, from the construction of his first crystal set radio receiver came his dream of taking this new technology and using it to bring sounds of voice and music into every home in America. Armstrong had saved up to buy an enigmatic glass tube which was called by its inventor, Lee de Forest, the Audion. While there seemed to be little practical use for this device, even from its inventor, Armstrong could see its potential.
