Speak to the Mountain

Speak to the Mountain PDF Author: Bessie W. Blake

Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 292

Book Description
Cultural Writing. Biography. African American Studies. SPEAK TO THE MOUNTAIN: THE TOMMIE WAITES STORY is a special book about a unique woman, Tommie Waites, who started from direst poverty in the Ar-La-Tex region of the country and overcame one powerful force after another until she emerged as one of America's leading Christian evangelists. The book, written by Tommie's daughter Bessie, clearly documents in words and photos just what kind of life a poor black family could expect in the Deep South before, during, and after the Depression. Dr. Blake chronicles her mother's determination to overcome mountains of poverty, illness, spousal abuse, racism, and gender bias in the country as a whole and in the ministry. Reading about the struggles of Tommie Waites, one can't help but recognize that the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow has been horror and deprivation but that it has also been a strengthening of spirit and determination for those who fought and survived. Tommie Waites didn't just survive,

Although Miss Bessie Myers is a figment of my imagination, she is every bit real in the sense that we all have a Miss Bessie in our lives. Miss Bessie is everyone’s crazy aunt, spooky neighbor, beloved grandmother, and dearest friend. She can be brutally honest, painfully funny, sweet as honey, and prickly as a pear. She is both the preacher’s staunchest supporter and sharpest critic. Of all the words used to describe this godly saint, there is one that stands out above them all … unpredictable.

Bessie

Bessie PDF Author: Chris Albertson
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300107560
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 334

Book Description
Considered by many to be the greatest blues singer of all time, Bessie Smith was also a successful vaudeville entertainer who became the highest paid African-American performer of the roaring twenties. This book--a revised and expanded edition of the classic biography of this extraordinary artist--debunks many of the myths that have circulated since her untimely death in 1937. Chris Albertson writes with insight and candor about the singer's personal life and her career, supplementing his historical research with dozens of interviews with her relatives, friends, and associates, in particular Ruby Walker Smith, a niece by marriage who toured with Bessie for over a decade. For this new edition he includes more details of Bessie's early years, new interview material, and a chapter devoted to events and responses that followed the original publication in 1971.

Our Bessie

Our Bessie PDF Author: Rosa Nouchette Carey
Publisher: DigiCat
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 200

Book Description
Most people under similar circumstances would have used stronger expressions, would have bemoaned themselves loudly, or at least inwardly, with all the pathos of self-pity. To be nearly at the end of one's journey, almost within sight and sound of home fires and home welcomes, and then to be snowed up, walled, imprisoned, kept in durance vile in an unexpected snowdrift—well, most human beings, unless gifted with angelic patience, and armed with special and peculiar fortitude, would have uttered a few groans under such depressing circumstances. Fortunately, Bessie Lambert was not easily depressed. She was a cheerful young person, an optimist by nature; and, thanks to a healthy organization, good digestion, and wholesome views of duty, was not given to mental nightmares, nor to cry out before she was hurt.

God's Bad Boy

God's Bad Boy PDF Author: Bessie W. Blake
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780983569947
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 380

Book Description
God's Bad Boy is a rapidly pace biographical narrative that reads like a novel. In this powerful story of a child caught in a web of ineffective social service systems, lessons learned at an early age merge with critical insights as the boy grows into a man who addresses the needs of children. James Blake pulls off the masks and replaces lies with truths that point to the reform of policies that govern youth services agencies. This book is instructive to childcare providers whether they are parents, social workers, teachers or counselors; and it, at the same time, offers models of success for young people who have lost hope. God's Bad Boy alternately fills the reader with anguish and laughter, and ultimately, with hope for the future of our children.
