MacArthur and West Point

MacArthur and West Point PDF Author: Sherman L. Fleek
Publisher: Texas A&M University Press
ISBN: 1648431909
Category : Biography & Autobiography

Pages : 466

Book Description
Few figures loom larger in the story of the United States Military Academy at West Point—or in US military history in general—than Douglas MacArthur. In this wide-ranging book, acclaimed military historian Sherman L. Fleek explores the mutual influence between the United States Military Academy and General of the Army Douglas MacArthur. More than a simple narration of MacArthur’s time at the academy—both as a cadet and as superintendent—this book examines how MacArthur and the institution that he regarded as a second home shaped each of them, along with the subsequent impacts both entities had on history and the conduct of the US military. Perhaps the preeminent figure among the handful of those who have guided and changed the direction of the academy at West Point and the “long gray line” of those who have passed through its halls, MacArthur frequently referred to the institution in letters, speeches, official documents, and personal contacts throughout his lifetime. Although MacArthur was only in residence at the military academy for seven years, in many ways he has never been absent from West Point, nor was the academy ever absent from the man. In MacArthur and West Point, Fleek offers readers a new perspective on the truly reciprocal nature of the longstanding relationship between one of the US military’s most significant historical figures and one of its most venerated institutions.

Book Description
The present volume, first published in 1962, consists of two distinguished speeches given by the General of the U.S. Army, Douglas MacArthur. The first address took place on April 19, 1951 and was held before a joint meeting of the two houses of United States Congress—the House of Representatives and the Senate—and took place in the Hall of the House of Representatives. This meeting followed on just one week from MacArthur’s removal from command by President Harry S. Truman. The second address was held on May 12, 1921 and was given to The Members of the Association of Graduates, U.S.M.A., The Corps of Cadets, and Distinguished Guests. It was given on the occasion of MacArthur’s acceptance of the Sylvanus Thayer Award for outstanding service to the nation, which had gone to Eisenhower the year before. The event was held at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York.

MacArthur in Asia

MacArthur in Asia PDF Author: Hiroshi Masuda
Publisher: Cornell University Press
ISBN: 0801466180
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 335

Book Description
General Douglas MacArthur's storied career is inextricably linked to Asia. His father, Arthur, served as Military Governor of the Philippines while Douglas was a student at West Point, and the younger MacArthur would serve several tours of duty in that country over the next four decades, becoming friends with several influential Filipinos, including the country's future president, Emanuel L. Quezon. In 1935, he became Quezon's military advisor, a post he held after retiring from the U.S. Army and at the time of Japan’s invasion of 1941. As Supreme Commander for the Southwest Pacific, MacArthur led American forces throughout the Pacific War. He officially accepted Japan's surrender in 1945 and would later oversee the Allied occupation of Japan from 1945 to 1951. He then led the UN Command in the Korean War from 1950 to 1951, until he was dismissed from his post by President Truman. In MacArthur in Asia, the distinguished Japanese historian Hiroshi Masuda offers a new perspective on the American icon, focusing on his experiences in the Philippines, Japan, and Korea and highlighting the importance of the general’s staff—the famous "Bataan Boys" who served alongside MacArthur throughout the Asian arc of his career—to both MacArthur’s and the region’s history. First published to wide acclaim in Japanese in 2009 and translated into English for the first time, this book uses a wide range of sources—American and Japanese, official records and oral histories—to present a complex view of MacArthur, one that illuminates his military decisions during the Pacific campaign and his administration of the Japanese Occupation.
