Book Description
Alan Jones shares his reminiscences of growing up in South Liverpool during the forties and fifties in the aftermath of the Second World War - the most destructive war the world has ever known. It was a time of austerity, of rationing, but also a time when the extended family was still largely in existence. As part of an extended family, he recalls how he spent as much time with his grandmother as he did with his parents, and given she had brought up nine children, it was a family of sizeable proportions. It was a time when children had much more freedom to roam the streets and when corporal punishment was woven into the fabric of school life.

A Wake-Up Call!

A Wake-Up Call! PDF Author: V. I. .Umenyiora
Publisher: Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency
ISBN: 1628571527
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 350

Book Description
A Wake-Up Call! was written by V. I. Umenyiora “because we have political problems in Nigeria and indeed Africa. My Heads of State from 1980 on made a public pronouncement inviting Nigerians home and abroad to submit solutions they consider will help solve some, if not all of the problems. I succeeded in this because they are using parts of the solutions I submitted in my previous books.” Following are some of the major solutions the author proposed: In his first publication, Nigeria – survival or disintegration! (ISBN 978-2335-28-2, 1988) you'll find: - Option A-4 taken verbatim from the pages; he recommended need for finger/ name-reader machines for use to simplify the exercise, which is in use now in Nigeria. He also proposed a need for a “National Orientation programme” for Nigeria to be installed in 1992; civil service reform or strengthening to serve the political parties irrespective of which one is in power in the country; the need for recapitalisation of banks to help business organisations raise adequate funding for their enterprises to cushion the effect of SAP, which not only debased the local currency but truncated all capital investments economically by the citizens! He also proposed the need to curb corruption, including an asset detection mechanism for Nigeria to help politicians/public servants in declaration of assets as required by the Constitution. It was pointed out there was a need for a “common-pool” approach in 1988-1989 and 1993, and in particular on the 4th June 2015 correspondence to the president against corruption. The author points out that banking reform, government corruption, affordable housing, infrastructure repair, and environmental concerns are only some of the problems being faced in Nigeria. This is the Challenge to What You Can Do for Your Country!

A Life of Barbara Stanwyck

A Life of Barbara Stanwyck PDF Author: Victoria Wilson
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1439194068
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 1056

Book Description
“860 glittering pages” (Janet Maslin, The New York Times): The first volume of the full-scale astonishing life of one of our greatest screen actresses—her work, her world, her Hollywood through an American century. Frank Capra called her, “The greatest emotional actress the screen has yet known.” Now Victoria Wilson gives us the first volume of the rich, complex life of Barbara Stanwyck, an actress whose career in pictures spanned four decades beginning with the coming of sound (eighty-eight motion pictures) and lasted in television from its infancy in the 1950s through the 1980s. Here is Stanwyck, revealed as the quintessential Brooklyn girl whose family was in fact of old New England stock; her years in New York as a dancer and Broadway star; her fraught marriage to Frank Fay, Broadway genius; the adoption of a son, embattled from the outset; her partnership with Zeppo Marx (the “unfunny Marx brother”) who altered the course of Stanwyck’s movie career and with her created one of the finest horse breeding farms in the west; and her fairytale romance and marriage to the younger Robert Taylor, America’s most sought-after male star. Here is the shaping of her career through 1940 with many of Hollywood's most important directors, among them Frank Capra, “Wild Bill” William Wellman, George Stevens, John Ford, King Vidor, Cecil B. Demille, Preston Sturges, set against the times—the Depression, the New Deal, the rise of the unions, the advent of World War II, and a fast-changing, coming-of-age motion picture industry. And at the heart of the book, Stanwyck herself—her strengths, her fears, her frailties, losses, and desires—how she made use of the darkness in her soul, transforming herself from shunned outsider into one of Hollywood’s most revered screen actresses. Fifteen years in the making—and written with full access to Stanwyck’s family, friends, colleagues and never-before-seen letters, journals, and photographs. Wilson’s one-of-a-kind biography—“large, thrilling, and sensitive” (Michael Lindsay-Hogg, Town & Country)—is an “epic Hollywood narrative” (USA TODAY), “so readable, and as direct as its subject” (The New York Times). With 274 photographs, many published for the first time.

I Love Myself When I Am Laughing... And Then Again When I Am Looking Mean and Impressive

I Love Myself When I Am Laughing... And Then Again When I Am Looking Mean and Impressive PDF Author: Zora Neale Hurston
Publisher: Feminist Press at CUNY
ISBN: 1936932741
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 315

Book Description
The foundational, classic anthology that revived interest in the author of Their Eyes Were Watching God—"one of the greatest writers of our time"—and made her work widely available for a new generation of readers (Toni Morrison). During her lifetime, Zora Neale Hurston was praised for her writing but condemned for her independence and audacity. Her work fell into obscurity until the 1970s, when Alice Walker rediscovered Hurston's unmarked grave and anthologized her writing in this groundbreaking collection for the Feminist Press. I Love Myself When I Am Laughing... And Then Again When I Am Looking Mean and Impressive established Hurston as an intellectual leader for future generations of black writers. A testament to the power and breadth of Hurston's oeuvre, this edition—newly reissued for the Feminist Press's fiftieth anniversary—features a new preface by Walker. "Through Hurston, the soul of the black South gained one of its most articulate interpreters." —The New York Times
