But just why it was needful for Donald to employ an amanuensis may not be stated. But this the writer will say, that when solicited to engage in his service, consent was given only on the condition he would make it clear that his motives in publishing his reminiscences were righteous. It is a bargain then, said Donald, for I assure you my hope is to do good to some poor fellow coming after me, who reading my story may shun the mistakes I made, and so not only escape the hard ships that beset my way, but make a better use of life and its opportunities. And, moreover, I will have nothing set down in malice, or with the remotest desire of doing injury to any one.
