Optimal Imperfection?

Optimal Imperfection? PDF Author: George Downs
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691225206
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 180

Book Description
"Domestic politics matters" has become a rallying cry for international relations scholars over the past decade, yet the question still remains: Just how does it matter? In this book, George Downs and David Rocke argue that an important part of the international impact of domestic politics springs from the institutional responses to its many uncertainties. This impact is due not so much to the errors in judgment these uncertainties can cause as to the strategic and institutional consequences of knowing that such errors are possible. The heart of the book is its formal analysis of how three kinds of domestic uncertainty have shaped international relations through their influence on three very different institutions. One chapter deals with the decision rules that citizens create to cope with uncertainty about the quality of their representation, and how these can lead to the paradoxical "gambling for resurrection" effect. Another chapter describes the extent to which the weak enforcement provisions of GATT can be understood as a mechanism to cope with uncertain but intermittent interest group demands for protection. The third chapter looks at the impact of uncertainty on the creation, survival, and membership of multilateral regulatory institutions, such as the Montreal Protocol and EU, when some states question the capacity of other states to meet their treaty obligations.

Household Income Uncertainties Over Three Decades

Household Income Uncertainties Over Three Decades PDF Author: James Feigenbaum
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 1437987435
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 39

Book Description
Studies the trend in household income uncertainty using a novel approach that measures income uncertainty as the variance of forecast errors at each future horizon separately without imposing parametric restrictions on the underlying income shocks. Household income uncertainty has risen significantly and persistently since the early 1970s. Their measure of near-future uncertainty in total family non-capital income rose 40% between 1971 and 2002. This rising uncertainty is likely due to the increase in variances of both persistent and transitory income shocks. The increase was most pronounced among single-earner households and high-income households. Charts and tables. This is a print on demand report.

International and Domestic Uncertainties

International and Domestic Uncertainties PDF Author: Mervyn King

Book Description
In this speech, the Governor first describes the Monetary Policy Committee's mandate and the approach the Committee takes in trying to meet it, essentially by maintaining a balance between overall demand and supply. He surveys the record of the authorities in meeting that goal since 1992. Turning to the current international situation, the Governor observes that it has been clear for some time that there needed to be a slowdown in the growth of the US economy to a more sustainable rate. He concludes that, while the United States may be in for a bumpy ride over the next few months, the most likely outcome for the year as a whole is continued growth of perhaps 2%-3%, and the overall world economy will probably grow at somewhat above its longer-term average rate. The Governor then identifies and discusses the major uncertainties in the domestic economic scene: the extent of supply-side capacity, the tightness of the labour market, and the growth rate of aggregate demand.

The Age of Uncertainty

The Age of Uncertainty PDF Author: Alessandro Colombo e Paolo Magri
Publisher: Edizioni Epoké
ISBN: 8899647534
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 127

Book Description
Uncertainties have piled up over the past decade, casting doubt on the stability of the international system. They have been further compounded and exacerbated by last year’s events: from Brexit, and the ensuing uncertainty about the future of the UK-EU relations, to the ever-growing success of populist and nationalist movements across Europe; from the unnerving paralysis of the international community on the war in Syria, to the new wave of terrorist attacks in Europe, to the new economic and political crises of pivotal states (Brazil, South Africa, Egypt, and Turkey) in their respective regions. Not to mention Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election, which may turn out to be a new and momentous source of uncertainty, especially with regard to US-EU relations, the residual resilience of the multilateral framework, as well as the international economic balance of power. The 2017 ISPI Report analyses how last year’s major events add to international uncertainties, also with a view to identifying long-term, beyond-the-horizon trends. The first part of the Report focuses on the evolution of the international context, from both a political and an economic standpoint. The second part shifts the spotlight to Italy, where global uncertainties overlap with deep-rooted domestic uncertainties and vulnerabilities.

Investment under Uncertainty

Investment under Uncertainty PDF Author: Robert K. Dixit
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400830176
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 484

Book Description
How should firms decide whether and when to invest in new capital equipment, additions to their workforce, or the development of new products? Why have traditional economic models of investment failed to explain the behavior of investment spending in the United States and other countries? In this book, Avinash Dixit and Robert Pindyck provide the first detailed exposition of a new theoretical approach to the capital investment decisions of firms, stressing the irreversibility of most investment decisions, and the ongoing uncertainty of the economic environment in which these decisions are made. In so doing, they answer important questions about investment decisions and the behavior of investment spending. This new approach to investment recognizes the option value of waiting for better (but never complete) information. It exploits an analogy with the theory of options in financial markets, which permits a much richer dynamic framework than was possible with the traditional theory of investment. The authors present the new theory in a clear and systematic way, and consolidate, synthesize, and extend the various strands of research that have come out of the theory. Their book shows the importance of the theory for understanding investment behavior of firms; develops the implications of this theory for industry dynamics and for government policy concerning investment; and shows how the theory can be applied to specific industries and to a wide variety of business problems.

Book Description
This survey features three parts. The first one covers the recent literature on domestic (i.e., country-specific) uncertainty and offers ten main takeaways. The second part reviews contributions on the fast-growing strand of the literature focusing on the macroeconomic effects of uncertainty spillovers and global uncertainty. The last part proposes a novel measure of global financial uncertainty and shows that its unexpected variations are associated to statistically and economically fluctuations of the world business cycle.

The Uncertain Superpower

The Uncertain Superpower PDF Author: Bernhard May
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 366311631X
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 202

Book Description
The book investigates US foreign policy in today's process of transformation. It shows how domestic factors determine more and more the superpower's paradigm of foreign policy. On the one hand, the US are the undisputed superpower as far as military, political or economic power are concerned, as well as cultural influence and leadership in interantional relations. On the other hand, the US have in the 90s practiced a rather non-dominant leadership in international relations, contrasting sharply America's potential. What are the reasons for this?

Modes of Uncertainty

Modes of Uncertainty PDF Author: Limor Samimian-Darash
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 022625710X
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 257

Book Description
The notion of risk, while receiving a great deal of scholarly attention, cannot fully explain the forms of uncertainty that we see around the world today. Distinguishing between danger, risk, and uncertainty, the essays in this book, by a group of leading junior scholars, consider problems of uncertainty in various domainsfinance and markets, security and humanitarianism, environment and health. While not ignoring previous scholarship on risk, this volume provides new analytical tools and case studies for understanding the many forms of uncertainty prevalent today. What kinds of truth claims about the future are common? What interventions are considered appropriate? What modes of subjectivity are produced within these policy frameworks? "Modes of Uncertainty" clears the path to answering these questions, among others, advancing our understanding of the forms of uncertainty that concern us all."
