Public Record Office This celebrated survey of the Palatinate of Durham was made in the year 1183, by order of Bishop Hugh Pudsey, kinsman to King Stephen. It probably took its name from Boldon, a township and parish near Sunderland. The original of the Boldon Book is not known to be extant. Three copies of it, however, remain 1. One preserved among the Auditor's Records, Durham. 2. One in the Library of the Dean and Chapter of Durham. 3. One among the mss. Of Archbishop Laud, at Oxford.
