The findings of pieces of plaster (mortar) together with prehistoric Ubaid pottery and artifacts, dated 5000-4000 BC, in Dosariyah at the eastern seashore of the Arabian peninsula were an archaeological surprise. The unusual plaster with polished surface and imprints of reed boundles (or palm branches) indicates a high level of building technology. In physical tests were confirmed a high compressive strength (12 MPa) at a relatively low density (1.6 g/cm3). Chemical analyses and X-Ray diffraction show calcite as predominant binder (70%) and considerable amounts (30%) of mainly silica components. No gypsum was found as previously supposed. Micro- scopical examinations show a large amount of diatomitic fossils and single crystallites with signs of reaction with lime. Also quartz is present in the mortar. It is to point out following original solutions of the builders of Dosariyah - The use of lime with diatomaceous earth as aggregate is producing a hydraulic mortar. This technic was much earlier (4000-5000 years) than the use of roman pozzolan. - Creating a reinforced structure of reed boundles and mortar. - Polishing the surface of the mortar for protection of the structure.
