Poverty continues to persist in many countries throughout the world despite improvements in the global trade regime and significant enhancement in agricultural productivity through the green revolution technologies. To achieve the millennium goal of halving poverty by 2015, these people should be provided with alternative production opportunities that can generate new employment and enhance incomes. Data from several countries reviewed in this study confirm that agricultural diversification can contribute to this. In a scenario of shrinking land and depleting water resources, the challenge of the new millennium is to increase biological yields to feed the ever-growing population without destroying the ecological foundation. It is thus important-not to package this challenge as a demand or imposition on farmers, for which they would bear the cost, but as a necessity and methodology to also sustain their welfare. This book deals with different practices in agriculture diversification. Care has been taken to include applied aspects and present scenario of different practices necessary for agriculture to the diversification. The book will be of use to the students, researchers and progressive farmers.

This study analyzed the determinants of crop diversification as well as the factors influencing the extent of crop diversification by smallholder farmers in Southern province. The study used secondary data from the Central Statistical Office of Zambia. Results from a double-hurdle model analysis indicates that landholding size, fertilizer quantity, distance to market, and the type of tillage mechanism adopted have a strong influence on whether a farmer practices crop diversification. Our findings have important implications for policies that are designed to enhance crop diversification. In particular, our results suggest the need for government to consider undertaking policies that will enhance farmers’ access to and control over land, that will provide farmers with improved access to agricultural imple-ments like ploughs, and that will bring trading markets closer to farmers.

As a result of the declining contribution of rice based farming in East Asia, investment in agriculture must diversify to maintain rural incomes. In the short term, countries should : 1) diversify toward crops for which there is a promising market ( fruits, vegetables, livestock products ) rather than sugar, rubber, coconuts and palm oil; and 2) expand small scale industry, marketing, and construction in rural areas. Long term needs include : a) higher yielding secondary food crops; b) better integration of livestock and crop production; c) more flexible irrigation and drainage systems; and d) improved technology to lower the cost of production. The paper concludes that the challenge to agriculture in East Asia is to sustain rice farming whicle expanding into a more flexible, diverse agriculture. The task for aid agencies will be to come up with suitable analytical skills and technical knowledge for the switch from commodity based project lending to broader sectoral support.
