Excerpt from Disturnell's Business Directory and Gazetteer of the West Coast of North America: Containing the Names, Business, and Location of All Merchants, Manufacturers, Professional Men and Public Officers in the Seaport and Adjacent Interior Towns of California, Oregon, Washington Territory, Alaska, British Columbia and Mexico IN placing before the public this volume, the compiler deems it appropriate to state that a long and varied experience in the com pilation of works of a similar character has convinced him of the absolute necessity of a thorough and systematic canvass of the localities embraced, in order to present publications that will sup ply the wants and merit the approbation of the mercantile com munity. In pursuance of this plan, a corps of experienced canvass ers have been employed in the collection of names and statistics for this work, from British Columbia on the north to Mexico on the south, and no pains or expense Spared to make it complete and reliable in, every respect. In addition to the alphabetical and classified lists of business men in many of the most important 10 calities in California, Oregon, Washington Territory, Alaska, British Columbia, and Mexico, it will be found to contain an accurate description of each city or town, commercial statistics, population, routes of travel, distances, and other valuable data; the whole forming a complete and useful Book of Reference for the business men of the Pacific Coast, Eastern States, and Europe. A valuable feature of the work is a reliable list of the merchants, etc., in several important towns on the west coast of Mexico, a rich and fertile section that is now attracting the attention of the merchants and manufacturers of the 'united States. In conclu sion, the complier respectfully tenders his thanks to the members of the press, public officers, and others, for their evidences of good will and cheerful response to requests for information. "The purpose of this study is simply to provide the information necessary for the proper interpretation of kiln-fired clay bricks found at archaeological sites. Bricks made of adobe, cement, or sand-lime are not included. Much of the emphasis has been placed on manufacturing techniques and the traces these processes leave behind, because they are a rich source of information that has been ignored by archaeologists. Brand names or trademarks found on some bricks have also been researched. This has led to the surprising conclusion that during the nineteenth century large quantities of firebricks were imported into the Pacific Northwest from England and Scotland. Size, color, and composition of bricks have also been examined. Extensive historical evidence as well as data from several archaeological sites complete the picture of an early and vigorous industry in the Pacific Northwest."--Preface.
