Book Description
Excerpt from Distributions of Fishes in Fresh Water of Katmai National Monument, Alaska, and Their Zoogeographical Implications Only one species in Naknek Lake, Arctic grayling, does not occur in the Coville -gros venor Lakes complex (table Three anad romous fishes, pink, churn, and chinook salmon, occur only rarely in this area. The absence of grayling in these lakes is puzzling because no major physical barriers exist between Grosvenor and Naknek Lakes, and the Grosvenor River and lower American Creek appear to be excellent grayling habitat. If gray ling are a relatively late arrival and still in the process of dispersal in the system, cau tious speculation suggests that their dispersal may be limited by the extreme turbidity of Iliuk Arm and Savonoski River. The general distribution and abundance of grayling in the system are limited, and no large numbers of this species are available to probe routinely through adverse environments. Other more complex environmental factors may be limiting grayling distribution in the system. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Species entries are annotated to include common names, recorded range, useful references, localities represented by specimens in the collection of the Auke Bay Fisheries Laboratory, and comments on taxonomy. Recorded geographic ranges are extended for 26 species. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Fishes of the Last Frontier

Fishes of the Last Frontier PDF Author: Bill Hauser
Publisher: Publication Consultants
ISBN: 1594335230
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 251

Book Description
Fishes of the Last Frontier answers many of your fish questions and others you haven't even thought of yet in a nontechnical, plain talk voice. Learn about the fishes that are of value or special interest to Alaskans: how fish are able to survive and grow, how they get along with each other--or not--and what they eat, where and how our Alaska fishes spawn, the difference between a red and a redd, and the difference between anadromous and catadromous and why that is important. The author, a fishery scientist with nearly 50 years of experience and training, including more than 30 years in Alaska, describes the life history characteristics of 43 species of fishes valuable or important in some way to Alaskans. He delves into various aspects of biology and ecology of fish and provides insight into how humans and fish interact. The processes of fishery management in Alaska are described. Fishes of the Last Frontier includes fishes from throughout Alaska in fresh, brackish, and marine waters and sport, commercial, and subsistence fisheries. Learn not just how anadromous fish find their way home but also how scientists were able to learn the details. Nontechnical readers have reported the presentations as enjoyable, understandable, and informative.
