Book Description
Excerpt from Distribution of Cotton Seed in 1909 Plant of Jones Improved type, robust, vigorous, and prolific, usually with several long basal branches and a central stem with comparatively short lateral branches; bolls large, 14 to 2 inches long, ovate, blunt pointed, 4 to 5 locked, mainly 5 locked, opening well; seeds 7 to 10 per lock, medium large, grayish, fuzzy, ordinarily well covered; lint fine, white, 1 - 3 lg to 1s inches in length, aver aging about 14 inches; percentage of lint 31 to 32 under ordinary conditions; season medium early. The Keenan cotton has lint which is slightly coarser and shorter than that of the Columbia variety and has a tendency to lack uni formity in length on the seed. The variety, however, has excellent lint as a whole, is prolific, opens well, and is fairly early. Tests under the conditions existing at Columbia, S. C., indicate that it is a variety of considerable promise. It requires to be further improved by selecting to secure a more uniform length of lint, this character yet remaining rather too variable.
