Abstract: Communication networks can be either infrastructure-based or infrastructure-less. Information dissemination and routing are two important research areas in networking, as the first is one of the ultimate goals forconstructing a network and the second provides the underlying support for disseminating information among nodes within the network. This dissertation presents three major research results, with the first falling into the category of information dissemination on the Internet, specifically, server replica placement, and the second and the third into the category of information dissemination and routing in wireless ad hoc networks, respectively. The World Wide Web is a popular mechanism that creates a client-server information sharing model to facilitate information dissemination across the Internet. With the explosive growth of the WWW, popular Web sites experience increasingly heavy workloads and a large percentage of Internet traffic. To alleviate the workload and the network traffic, these sites usually place a set of servers geographically distributed across the Internet and replicate their contents to the selected replicas. The server replica placement scheme addresses the problem of properly placing a set of replicas among sets of candidate sites to optimize system performance gain. More specifically, using an optimum replica placement algorithm, we study the relationship between the replica size and the optimized performance gain through a trace-driven simulation. We also perform a parametric study to find out the effect of client demand patterns on the optimized performance gain growth. The field of wireless ad hoc networks has become a prosperous research field in recent years thanks to the rapid development and popularity of various mobile devices. The lack of infrastructure allows a fast and inexpensive deployment of wireless ad hoc networks and, thus, makes them suitable for surveillance applications. However, the ad hoc networks' flexibility and convenience do come at a price. The infamous characteristics of these networks, such as unstable wireless media, dynamic network topology due to link disruptions and node mobility, and power constrained wireless devices, require protocols designed for these networks to be fully distributed, energy efficient, fault (disruption) tolerant, and scalable. Following these design rules, we propose Scalable Data Storage and Retrieval Service (SDSR), to enhance data dissemination for large-scale wireless ad hoc networks, and Disruption Tolerant Geographic Routing protocol (DTGR) to enhance the performance of geographic routing schemes in the presence of frequently occurring disruptions for wireless ad hoc networks.

Abstract: It has been envisioned that in the near future, wireless ad hoc networks would populate various application fields, ranging from disaster relief, environmental monitoring, surveillance, to medical applications, the observation of chemical and biological processes and community mesh networks. The decentralized and self-organizing nature of wireless ad hoc networks makes distributed algorithms fit very well in these networks, which however pose great challenges to the algorithm designers as they try to achieve optimal efficiency in communications. In this thesis, I develop a set of distributed algorithms addressing these challenges and solving some fundamental communication problems in wireless ad hoc networks. Communications in wireless ad hoc networks happen on a shared medium, and consequently are subject to interference. The first part of the thesis focuses on disseminating information on multiple-access channels while avoiding collisions. For both single-channel and multi-channel networks, the complexity of information dissemination is investigated, and nearly optimal distributed algorithms are proposed. The second part of the thesis focuses on designing efficient distributed algorithms for some fundamental problems under the physical Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise-Ratio (SINR) interference model. The SINR model defines global fading interference with which the success of a signal reception depends on all simultaneous transmissions. Compared with graph based models, the SINR model reflects the fading and cumulative nature of radio signals. Hence, the SINR model represents the physical reality more precisely. However, the global nature of the SINR model makes the analysis of distributed algorithms much more challenging. Two types of fundamental problems are addressed in this part. The first type is closely related to communication coordination, including the wireless link scheduling problem and the node coloring problem. The second type of problems are about basic communication primitives, including the local broadcasting problem and the multiple-message broadcast problem. I investigate the complexity of these fundamental problems under the SINR interference model, and present efficient or optimal distributed algorithms. In the third part of the thesis, I propose a general interference model that can include commonly adopted interference models as special cases, and study whether efficient distributed algorithms can still be designed and analyzed in such a general model. Specifically, the affectance model is proposed in this part, which depicts the relative interference (affectance) on communication links caused by transmitting nodes. Both graph based models and the SINR model can be transformed into the affectance model. Under this general model, distributed algorithms with worst-case guarantees for the local broadcasting problem are presented. I also show how to make use of the developed techniques to get nearly optimal algorithms under the graph based model and the SINR model. Ad-hoc networks are distributed, self-organized networks which do not need a fixed infrastructure. Entities in networks of this sort must collaborate to make network services - such as routing - functional. In these environments, many algorithms from wired networks cannot be naively adapted without congesting the network. The author's work is focused on the study of the information distribution protocol. Indeed, without application, ad-hoc network technologies are useless. Managing services consists of providing a reliable and easy way to develop distributed applications. This work contributes to this study in two specific ways. First, it provides a mathematical model that deals with the best possible site of information source nodes in a graph of infinite density. Thus, nodes can be laid out where desired. Second, it provides an algorithm which achieves an effective distribution of information among the nodes of the network. This algorithm can then be used to publish the description of a service among the network to make its research easy. This study"s results provide a settlement for the design of a distributed of information in ad-hoc networks. Moreover, the results can be used in other application fields such as QoS multi-path routing.
