This study compared two types of self-instructional tests used as adjuncts to an expository text. One type of test (Pure Self-Test) incorporated two types of items, one assessing and remedying errors of memory and the other assessing and remedying errors of understanding. The other type of self-instructional test (Mixed Self-Test) was composed of a single type of complex question requiring answers involving memory plus understanding; remedial feedback was likewise mixed. Forty-eight high school sophomores were divided into three groups: One group studied the expository text alone (Basic Text Group), one studied the text plus the Pure Self-Test, and one studied the text plus the Mixed Self-Test. Five days later, each group was given a criterion test composed of the two self tests sans answers. There were no significant differences among groups on total criterion test scores, but the Pure Self-Test Group did best on the pure items and the Mixed Self-Test Group did best on the mixed items. The Basic Text Group did well on the pure recall items, fair on the mixed, recall-and-memory items but poorly on the pure understanding items. The generality of these findings is limited by the fact that none of the three lesson formats were highly effective. (Author).

What is the self? Does it exist? If it does exist, what is it like? It's not clear that we even know what we're asking about when we ask these large, metaphysical questions. The idea of the self comes very naturally to us, and it seems rather important, but it's also extremely puzzling. As for the word 'self'—it's been taken in so many different ways that it seems that you can mean more or less what you like by it and come up with almost any answer. Galen Strawson proposes to approach the (seeming) problem of the self by starting from the thing that makes it seem there is a problem in the first place: our experience of the self, our experience of having or being a self, a hidden, inner mental presence or locus of consciousness. He argues that we should consider the phenomenology (experience) of the self before we attempt its metaphysics (its existence and nature). And when we have considered what it's like for human beings (assuming we can generalize about ourselves), we need to consider what it might be like for other possible creatures: what's the very least that might count as experience of oneself as a self? This, he proposes, will give us a good idea of what we ought to be looking for when we go on to ask whether there is such a thing-an idea worth following wherever it leads. It leads Strawson to conclude that selves, inner subjects of experience, do indeed exist. But they bear little resemblance to traditional conceptions of the self.

These Studies in Philosophy represents all the published and only a few unpublished writings of Krishnachandra Bhattacharyya. These published writing date back to 1908, but his characteristic philosophical position assumes definite shape in the writings during the year 1928-36. The publications of the period outnumber and far outweigh those that fall during the previous twenty years. Of the twenty-one tracts published first in two separate Volumes, which in this edition appear as bound together in one, fourteen belong to this period, the others covering the previous years. Prof. Bhattacharyya had a deep study of ancient Indian Philosophy, particularly of Advaita Vedanta, Sankhya, Yoga and Jain Philosophies. Vol. I. contains Prof. Bhattacharyyaês constructive interpretation of these systems. He was also well-versed in classical German Philosophy, particularly that of Kant. His vast and deep study provided the intellectual background in the light of which his profoundly original mind could go on with the work of construction. He constructed a new system of his own which however is not easy to comprehend. Vol. II contains all the basic writings in which Prof. Bhattacharyyaês philosophy has been formulated. In the Introduction to this Volume, the Editor has usefully analysed the Authorês philosophical position in some details.

This book is a comprehensive analysis of the criminal defence of self-defence from a philosophical, legal and human rights perspective. The primary focus is on self-defence as a defence to homicide, as this is the most difficult type of self-defensive force to justify. Although not always recognised as such, self-defence is a contentious defence, permitting as it does the victim of an attack to preserve her life at the expense of another. If one holds that all human life is of equal value, explaining why this is permissible poses something of a challenge. It is particularly difficult to explain where the aggressor is, for reasons of non-age or insanity for example, not responsible for her actions. The first part of the book is devoted to identifying the proper theoretical basis of a claim of self-defence. It examines the classification of defences, and the concepts of justification and excuse in particular, and locates self-defence within this classification. It considers the relationship between self-defence and the closely related defences of duress and necessity. It then proceeds critically to analyse various philosophical explanations of why self-defensive killing is justified, before concluding that the most convincing account is one that draws on the right to life with an accompanying theory of forfeiture. The book then proceeds to draw upon this analysis to examine various aspects of the law of self-defence. There is detailed analysis of the way in which, on a human rights approach, it is appropriate to treat the issues of retreat, imminence of harm, self-generated self-defence, mistake and proportionality, with a particular focus on whether lethal force is ever permissible in protecting property or in preventing rape. The analysis draws on material from all of the major common law jurisdictions. The book concludes with an examination of the implications that the European Convention on Human Rights might have for the law of self-defence, especially in the areas of mistaken belief and the degree of force permissible to protect property.
