Virgil's Aeneid

Virgil's Aeneid PDF Author: Kenneth Quinn
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000929205
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 149

Book Description
First published in 1968, Virgil’s Aeneid is to help all who approach the long and difficult poem seriously (in Latin or in English) to read it with discerning appreciation. This is not a handbook, nor is it a commentary: it is a critical description, from a number of aspects, of a poetic structure. A detailed analysis of the twelve books is preceded by a preliminary exploration of the poem’s central purpose, a careful reconstruction of the historical and artistic circumstances, and a description of the main outlines of the poem’s structure; two further chapters provide a discussion of a number of theoretical problem and an analysis of the verbal fabric. This book will be of interest to students of classical literature and history.

Madness Unchained

Madness Unchained PDF Author: Lee Fratantuono
Publisher: Lexington Books
ISBN: 9780739122426
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 452

Book Description
The book aims at providing a coherent guide to the entirety of Virgil's Aeneid, with analysis of every scene and, in some cases, every line of crucial passages. The book tries to provide a guide to the vast bibliography and scholarly apparatus that has grown around Virgil studies (especially over the past century), and to offer some critical study of what Virgil's purpose and intent may have been in crafting his response to Augustus' political ascendancy in Rome, Rome's history of near-constant civil strife, and the myths of Rome's origins and their conflicting Trojan, Greek, and native Italian origins.

The Speeches in Vergil's Aeneid

The Speeches in Vergil's Aeneid PDF Author: Gilbert Highet
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400869463
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 391

Book Description
In the Aeneid men, women, gods, and goddesses are characterized by the speeches assigned to them far more than by descriptions of their appearance or behavior. Most of the speeches are highly emotional and individualized, reminding us of the most powerful utterances of Greek tragedy. Gilbert Highet has analyzed all the speeches in the Aeneid, using statistical techniques as well as more traditional methods of scholarship. He has classified the speeches; identified their models in earlier Greek and Latin literature; analyzed their structure; and discussed their importance in the portrayal of character. He finds that Vergil used standard rhetorical devices with discretion, and that his models were poets rather than orators. Nevertheless, this study shows Vergil to have been a master dramatist as well as a great epic poet. Originally published in 1972.
