Book Description
When Beth Dolinsky's military husband returns from deployment with post-traumatic stress and gambles all their money away, this mousy, church-going housewife and mother of twin boys has to take matters into her own hands. Against the advice of friends and family, 40-year-old Beth applies to become a deputy sheriff and embarks on the toughest journey of her life. Now, Recruit Dolinsky finds herself out of place in her new world, even though she no longer fits into her old one. As Beth fights for her family and her right to hold this position of strength, she must convince not only the inmates in the jail, but also the "squared-away" sergeants and deputies half her age (with double the attitude) that she really can fire a gun, perform strip searches that would make even the toughest inmate squirm, restrain men twice her size, and control 70 criminals with the strategic use of the f-word. And in the process, Beth manages to convince herself that she can handle anything that comes her way. DISHRAGS TO DIRTBAGS is a story of inner strength, motherhood, reinvention, and acceptance. "A surprisingly intimate view of the relationship and mutual respect between this deputy and her inmates. It's a must-read " Rosalie Pope, Author of PUPPIES FOR SALE $25, winner of the Next Generation Indie Book Award

What truly influences our decisions in today’s message-cluttered world? In Buyology, Martin Lindstrom presents the astonishing findings from his groundbreaking three-year, seven-million-dollar neuromarketing study—a cutting-edge experiment that peered inside the brains of 2,000 volunteers from all around the world as they encountered various ads, logos, commercials, brands, and products. His startling results shatter much of what we have long believed about what captures our interest—and drives us to buy. Among the questions he explores: • Does sex actually sell? • Does subliminal advertising still surround us? • Can “cool” brands trigger our mating instincts? • Can our other senses—smell, touch, and sound—be aroused when we see a product? Buyology is a fascinating and shocking journey into the mind of today's consumer that will captivate anyone who's been seduced—or turned off—by marketers' relentless attempts to win our loyalty, our money, and our minds.

Book Description
The first piece of known typewriter art was a "drawing" of a butterfly by Flora F. F. Stacey in 1898; since then, artists, designers, poets, and writers have used this rigorous medium to produce an astounding range of creative work. This beautiful book brings together some of the best examples by typewriter artists around the world. As well as key historical work from the Bauhaus, H. N. Werkman, and the concrete poets, there is art by contemporary practitioners, both typewriter artists who use the keyboard as a "palette" to create artworks, and artists/typographers using the form as a compositional device. The book will appeal to graphic designers, typographers, artists, and illustrators, and anyone fascinated by predigital technology.

Crass Reflections

Crass Reflections PDF Author: Alastair Gordon
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781909798229
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 250

Book Description
An undergraduate monograph of essays originally written in the mid 1990s. The central theme sets up and critically examines the need to examine the work of the anarchist punk band Crass in light of a poverty of discussion of their activities in previous cultural studies writings on punk. Equally, notions of endpoints in underground cultures are put to the question. The broad thesis of the monograph interrogates links between critical theory and Frankfurt school perspectives on art and subversive culture and Neo Marxist accounts of their phylogeny. There is critical discussion of the tension and similarities between Crass and Neo Marxist accounts of the role of dominant ideology (traditional notions of false consciousness/media effect) in contrast to the cultural monopoly of survival needs as the central motor of social reproduction in capitalist culture. The monograph concludes with a discussion of the importance of the legacy of Crass and the need for future research. This monograph was written before the groundswell of punk scholarship in its wake and serves as vindication of its obscure and early importance. It's principle importance lies in the fact that most accounts beyond this work have focussed not on critical theory but instead on historical contextual salience, aesthetic value and biographical detail. This new edition comprises a new extensive introduction assessing methodological approaches in punk scholarship and examines the stormy DiY publication and contextual history of the original monograph. Moreover expanded versions of an original chapter is included in addition to essays on subversive culture, the 1982 Falklands conflict and an examination of philosophical approaches to repressive technologies.
