The text has required but few modifications and additions to make it thoroughly represent the thought of the year. This is so for the reason that, although many contributions have been pub lished since the appearance of the German edit-ion, some of these have been the thrashing out of old straw, and others have been anticipated by the far-sightedness of the author.
