Discovering Radical Contingency

Discovering Radical Contingency PDF Author: Richard Gordon Bagnall
Publisher: Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers
ISBN:
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 260

Book Description
Discovering Radical Contingency examines the implications of postmodern culture for education, particularly those involving adult learners. Against a critical review of modernist culture and education, a comparative account of the postmodern is posited. That account is reconfigured as a set of six tensions. These tensions are then used in exploring the nature of educational practice and engagement in postmodernity, from different perspectives: through dialogues with students of that practice; through case studies of practice; as descriptive tendencies of engagement; and as nodal forms of programmatic activity. The book closes with chapters examining the nature of educational research and the professional development of adult educators in postmodernity.

Contingency, Irony, and Solidarity

Contingency, Irony, and Solidarity PDF Author: Richard Rorty
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521367813
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 222

Book Description
In this 1989 book Rorty argues that thinkers such as Nietzsche, Freud, and Wittgenstein have enabled societies to see themselves as historical contingencies, rather than as expressions of underlying, ahistorical human nature or as realizations of suprahistorical goals. This ironic perspective on the human condition is valuable on a private level, although it cannot advance the social or political goals of liberalism. In fact Rorty believes that it is literature not philosophy that can do this, by promoting a genuine sense of human solidarity. A truly liberal culture, acutely aware of its own historical contingency, would fuse the private, individual freedom of the ironic, philosophical perspective with the public project of human solidarity as it is engendered through the insights and sensibilities of great writers. The book has a characteristically wide range of reference from philosophy through social theory to literary criticism. It confirms Rorty's status as a uniquely subtle theorist, whose writing will prove absorbing to academic and nonacademic readers alike.

The Nature of Contingency

The Nature of Contingency PDF Author: Alastair Wilson
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 0198846215
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 232

Book Description
This book defends a radical new theory of contingency as a physical phenomenon. Drawing on the many-worlds approach to quantum theory and cutting-edge metaphysics and philosophy of science, it argues that quantum theories are best understood as telling us about the space of genuine possibilities, rather than as telling us solely about actuality. When quantum physics is taken seriously in the way first proposed by Hugh Everett III, it provides the resources for a new systematic metaphysical framework encompassing possibility, necessity, actuality, chance, counterfactuals, and a host of related modal notions. Rationalist metaphysicians argue that the metaphysics of modality is strictly prior to any scientific investigation; metaphysics establishes which worlds are possible, and physics merely checks which of these worlds is actual. Naturalistic metaphysicians respond that science may discover new possibilities and new impossibilities. This book's quantum theory of contingency takes naturalistic metaphysics one step further, allowing that science may discover what it is to be possible. As electromagnetism revealed the nature of light, as acoustics revealed the nature of sound, as statistical mechanics revealed the nature of heat, so quantum physics reveals the nature of contingency.

Contingency and Normativity: The Challenges of Richard Rorty

Contingency and Normativity: The Challenges of Richard Rorty PDF Author: Rosa Maria Calcaterra
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004393838
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 154

Book Description
Richard Rorty’s “neo-pragmatism” launched a powerful challenge to entrenched philosophical certainties of modernity, articulating a powerful picture of normativity as a distinctive activity of human beings. This “contingentism,” with its emphasis on indeterminacy, ambiguity, uncertainty, and chance, depicts normativity as a practical human possibility rather than a metaphysical bottleneck which we must overcome at the cost of repudiating the concrete ways we grant epistemic and ethical meaning to our activities. The book is a critical survey of Rorty’s philosophy, in light of contemporary theoretical debates around language, truth, justification, and naturalism, as well as his own resourceful attempts to renew philosophy from within by using the conceptual tools and argumentative techniques of both analytic philosophy and pragmatism.
