Multiplicity Distributions in Ee− Annihilation at 29 GeV

Book Description
The charged particle multiplicity distributions for single jets in ee− annihilation at 29 GeV have been measured using the High Resolution Spectrometer at PEP. The shape of the distribution agrees well with a Poisson distribution. No correlation is observed between the multiplicities in the two jets of an event. For fixed values of the prong number of the total event, the multiplicity sharing between the two jets is in good agreement with a binomial distribution. These observations are contrasted to the results from soft hadronic collisions and conclusions are drawn about the nature of clusters. 21 refs., 4 figs.

Book Description
By comparing 3-jet (ee− .-->. q anti q g) and radiative 2-jet (ee− .-->. q anti q .gamma.) events from electron-positron annihilation, we have studied the local and global effects of the presence of a hard bremsstrahlung gluon in hadronic events. Detector and event selection efficiencies and biases affect these two kinds of events almost equally because they have very similar kinematics and topologies. Accurate comparisons of q anti q g and q anti q .gamma. events can therefore be made. Globally, we observe a depletion of hadrons in q anti q g events relative to q anti q .gamma. events on the opposite side of the event plane from the gluon, in the angular region between the q and anti q jets. This depletion is shown to be in agreement with the predictions of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The existence of this effect demonstrates that the presence of a gluon significantly alters the color forces and hence the fragmentation process in hadronic events. We also use these q anti q .gamma. and q anti q g events to compare low energy (4.5 GeV) gluon and quark jets. Our data indicate that gluon jets have softer x/sub p/ distributions than quark jets, while the transverse momentum distributions of these two types of jets are identical within our errors. Although we are unable to determine if the multiplicities of gluon (n/sub /) and quark (n/sub q/) jets are different, the ratio n/sub g//n/sub q/ = 9/4 predicted asymptotically in QCD would not be consistent with our data.

Book Description
Recent results on particle production in ee− annihilation at 29 GeV are reviewed. The data were obtained using the High Resolution Spectrometer at PEP and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 300 pb−1. The mean charged particle multiplicity in gluon jets from the three-jet events is found not to differ from that measured for quark jets. The production of the scalar meson S(975) and the tensor mesons f°(1270) and K*(1430) are observed and the rates are compared to the previously observed vector mesons, rho and K*(890). Finally, some of the global properties of charged particle production are presented and compared with similar results from soft hadronic collisions. 16 refs., 7 figs.

Book Description
Recent results from HRS on the production of scalar, tensor, and charm mesons and of strange and charm baryons in ee− annihilation are presented. The production of f0(975), f2(1270), and K2*(1430) is shown briefly. The decays of D*(2010) and D*(2007)° are studied in detail. The production of .xi.− and .sigma.(1385)/sup + -/ is mentioned. Finally, the preliminary analyses of .lambda./sub c/ and .sigma./sub c//sup 0,++/ productions are presented.
