Book Description
Development of high power lasers opened a new era of scientific innovations. Now it is possible to study the matter properties under extreme conditions applicable to large number of potential applications. The field of laser-plasma interaction is very vast and wealthy in content. In this thesis we present three basic aspects related to the subject. We have developed a new model for laser interaction with solid targets which is applicable for the laser pulse duration ranging from femtoseconds to picoseconds. The benchmarking of the model is done by testing various special cases. The absorption model is coupled with one dimension radiation hydrodynamics, opacity and equation of state data in order to simulate various experiments. The interaction of laser with atomic cluster is also investigated in this monograph. A new hydrodynamic model for laser cluster interaction is presented. Our model takes into account the radial non-uniformity of the expanding cluster under the influence of incident laser. Finally the laser induced ion acceleration is also studied using one dimensional particle-in-cell code.

Energy Transfer and Dissipation in Plasma Turbulence

Energy Transfer and Dissipation in Plasma Turbulence PDF Author: Yan Yang

Book Description
This book revisits the long-standing puzzle of cross-scale energy transfer and dissipation in plasma turbulence and introduces new perspectives based on both magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) and Vlasov models. The classical energy cascade scenario is key in explaining the heating of corona and solar wind. By employing a high-resolution hybrid (compact finite difference & WENO) scheme, the book studies the features of compressible MHD cascade in detail, for example, in order to approximate a real plasma cascade as “Kolmogorov-like” and to understand features that go beyond the usual simplified theories based on incompressible models. When approaching kinetic scales where plasma effects must be considered, it uses an elementary analysis of the Vlasov–Maxwell equations to help identify the channels through which energy transfer must be dissipated. In addition, it shows that the pressure–strain interaction is of great significance in producing internal energy. This analysis, in contrast to many other recent studies, does not make assumptions about wave-modes, instability or other specific mechanisms responsible for the dynamics – the results are direct consequences of the Vlasov–Maxwell system of equations. This is an important step toward understanding dissipation in turbulent collisionless plasma in space and astrophysics.

Direct Numerical Simulation of the Influence of Plasmas on Turbulent Flows

Book Description
This work uses direct numerical simulation to study the thermal effect of a region of plasma on quiescent air. The simulations solve the compressible ideal gas Navier-Stokes equations using Fourier spectral methods. A shock capturing scheme is incorporated to account for the strong shock waves. Also, a logarithmic formulation for the continuity equation is developed to handle low densities at the core of the plasma.

Plasma Heating Through Parametrically Induced Turbulence

Plasma Heating Through Parametrically Induced Turbulence PDF Author: Arthur Lawrence Pavel
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Plasma heating
Languages : en
Pages : 28

Book Description
Electromagnetic waves have been shown to be capable of significantly modifying both the magnetospheric and ionospheric plasma. Laboratory studies of the plasma instabilities generated in microwave-plasma interactions have helped to understand the geophysical experiments. Microwave-plasma research has also been useful in modeling the interaction of lasers and plasmas, particularly in relation to efforts using pulsed lasers to compress and heat plasma to thermonuclear conditions. An experiment is described which investigates the evolution of the parametric instability which occurs with near resonant matching of the microwave frequency and plasma frequency. Near threshold, a finely detailed spectrum of satelite electron plasma waves is observed. These waves break down into a turbulent plasma condition with a marked change in power absorbed by the plasma. The plasma passes through several distinctive regimes of turbulent plasma conditions. At the highest power levels used, there are plasma waves hundreds of megacycles from the driving frequency. The plasma is found to absorb a significant amount of power and heat electrons to high energies. (Author).
