The changes in the life of households based on the Colombian Longitudinal Survey (ELCA) by Universidad de los Andes. The Colombian Longitudinal Survey by the Universidad de los Andes (ELCA by its acronym in spanish), is the first survey of this type that has been undertaken in Colombia, and that has, to date, three rounds: the baseline in 2010, the first followup round in 2013, and the second follow-up round in 2016. The project is being developed by the Department of Economics and its objective is to contribute to research on the country by using unique sources of information that allow for a more precise analysis to be undertaken on the dynamics of households and the changes in their quality of life over time. Over a decade, ELCA aims to follow more than ten thousand households in urban and rural zones in Colombia; until now there have been six follow-up years.

With the role of local government becoming more important as Latin American countries moved away from state-led development models in the 1980s, and with social movements helping to bring about the transition to democracy, questions arose about whether and how popular participation at the local level might be able to contribute to the consolidation of democracy from the grassroots upward. This book, based on extensive research in low-income districts of Lima, provides a sophisticated analysis of the relationship between a resurgent civil society and democratization. Exploring the complex interactions among urban popular movements, local government, political parties, and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), Schönwälder shows that the democratic potential of these movements is genuine but that their influence has been limited. His balanced assessment credits their achievements while illuminating the sources of their failures, mainly a variety of institutional barriers and a persistent threat of manipulation and co-optation by stronger actors, especially political parties. His analysis helps us understand better why the left has so often failed to convert its considerable support at the grassroots into political successes at higher levels.

In the months following disgraced ex-President Alberto Fujimori's flight to Japan, Peru had a political crisis on its hands. The newly elected government that came together in mid-2001 faced a skeptical and suspicious public, with no magic bullet for achieving legitimacy. Many argued that the future of democracy was at stake, and that the government's ability to decentralize and incorporate new actors in decision-making processes was critical. Toward that end, the country's political elite devolved power to subnational governments and designed new institutions to encourage broader citizen participation. By 2002, Peru's participatory decentralization reform (PDR) was finalized and the experiment began. This book explores the possibilities and limitations of the decision to restructure political systems in a way that promotes participation. The analysis also demonstrates the power that political, historical, and institutional factors can have in the design and outcomes of participatory institutions. Using original data from six regions of Peru, political scientist Stephanie McNulty documents variation in PDR implementation, delves into the factors that explain this variation, and points to regional factors as prime determinants in the success or failure of participatory institutions.

Las organizaciones, las instituciones y la sociedad pueden ser modelados como estructuras orgnicas en la medida en que el ser humano aumente su nivel de consciencia de pertenecer a un orden maravilloso basado en la Ley del Amor. Toda estructura organizacional y social tiene un grado de organicidad de acuerdo al nivel de cooperacin que haya entre sus integrantes. Mientras mayor su capacidad de cooperar, mayor ser su grado de organicidad. El paradigma orgnico puede contribuir a modelar conceptualmente la Sociedad, el sistema econmico y el Estado. El proceso de transicin de la Sociedad Moderna a la Sociedad Orgnica puede darse a travs de cambios minimalistas intercalados con acciones radicales puntuales que permitan alcanzar el resultado esperado. Si este tipo de proceso no es implementado, pueden surgir crisis en el sistema que degeneren en situaciones de caos.
