Similarity and Modeling in Science and Engineering

Similarity and Modeling in Science and Engineering PDF Author: Josef Kuneš
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1907343784
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 451

Book Description
The present text sets itself in relief to other titles on the subject in that it addresses the means and methodologies versus a narrow specific-task oriented approach. Concepts and their developments which evolved to meet the changing needs of applications are addressed. This approach provides the reader with a general tool-box to apply to their specific needs. Two important tools are presented: dimensional analysis and the similarity analysis methods. The fundamental point of view, enabling one to sort all models, is that of information flux between a model and an original expressed by the similarity and abstraction Each chapter includes original examples and applications. In this respect, the models can be divided into several groups. The following models are dealt with separately by chapter; mathematical and physical models, physical analogues, deterministic, stochastic, and cybernetic computer models. The mathematical models are divided into asymptotic and phenomenological models. The phenomenological models, which can also be called experimental, are usually the result of an experiment on an complex object or process. The variable dimensionless quantities contain information about the real state of boundary conditions, parameter (non-linearity) changes, and other factors. With satisfactory measurement accuracy and experimental strategy, such models are highly credible and can be used, for example in control systems.

Similitude and Modelling

Similitude and Modelling PDF Author: E. Szücs
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080983782
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 336

Book Description
Similitude and Modeling describes the theoretical aspects and application of similitude method using mathematical apparatus. This book is organized into two parts encompassing 13 chapters, and begins with an introduction to a simple technological problem in similitude modeling. The first part deals with the concept, physical fundamentals, dimensional analysis, and approximate and partial modeling of similitude. This part explores also the preparation and evaluation of similitude experiments, as well as the general types of similitude invariants. The second part highlights the application areas of similitude modeling, including heat conduction and diffusion, fluid dynamics, elastic deformation, and chemical reactions. This book will prove useful to plant and design engineers.

Progress in Theoretical Biology

Progress in Theoretical Biology PDF Author: Fred M. Snell
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 148322497X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 247

Book Description
Progress in Theoretical Biology, Volume 1 brings together the significant and timely theoretical developments in particular areas of biology. Topics range from chemical evolution and biological self-replicating systems to quantitative aspects of goal-seeking self-organizing systems. An essay on Erwin Schrödinger (1887-1961) and his work on genetics and quantum mechanics, as well as its influence on molecular biology, is also included. Comprised of five chapters, this volume first discusses chemical evolution in terms of organic geochemistry and prebiotic chemistry. Dehydration condensation reactions as well as the generation of order and new information are also considered. The next chapter deals with biological self-replicating systems and focuses on such topics as the minimum system capable of self-replication; the minimum system capable of self-replication in terms of the generalizations of terrestrial biology; and which biological systems most nearly approach this limiting behavior. A series of definitions that provide a framework for examining minimal reproducing systems are also presented. The final three chapters explore the quantitative aspects of goal-seeking self-organizing systems; statistical thermodynamics of polymerization and polymorphism of proteins; and the importance of models in theoretical biology. This book is intended for both biological and physical scientists.

Physical and Information Models in Geography (Routledge Revivals)

Physical and Information Models in Geography (Routledge Revivals) PDF Author: Richard Chorley
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135121001
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 312

Book Description
First published in 1967, this book explores the theme of geographical generalization, or model building. It is composed of eight of the chapters from the original Models in Geography, published in 1967. The first chapter broadly outlines geographical generalization and examines the nature and function of generalized statements, ranging from conceptual models to scale models, in a geographical context. The following chapter deals with model theory in a wider scientific framework and the rest of the book discusses models of physical systems and information models. The book considers model-type generalizations that are applied in the three fields of geomorphology, meteorology and climatology, and hydrology before focusing on the transference of information and ideas in geography. This text represents a robustly anti-idiographic statement of modern work in one of the major branches of geography.
