The Sea Island Mathematical Manual: Surveying and Mathematics in Ancient China
Author:
Publisher: Penn State Press
ISBN: 0271038438
Category : Mathematics, Chinese
Languages : en
Pages : 89
Book Description
An annotated translation and analysis of the Haidao Suanjing, a Chinese mathematical classic composed by Liu Hui in A.D. 263. All ancient societies practiced the art of land surveying. In fact, tradition tells us that geometry--land measure--had its origins in such surveying. However, an examination of early Western literature reveals few records concerning the practical uses of geometry and mathematics in the tasks of surveying. Recent research into the content and origins of early Chinese mathematics is beginning to reveal the existence of strong traditions and interest in the methodologies and applications of land survey. It is from these Chinese sources that a clearer picture of how people adapted mathematics and geometry to the needs of surveying emerges. The Haidao Suanjing, or Sea Island Mathematical Manual, is one of the "Ten Classics" of traditional Chinese mathematics, and its contents demonstrate the high standards of theoretical and mathematical sophistication present in early Chinese surveying theory. The Haidao established the mathematical procedures for much of East Asian surveying activity for the next one thousand years. The contents of the Haidao also testify to the ability of the Chinese to systematize mathematics and hint at the use of proof in Chinese mathematics, a concept usually associated with Greek mathematical thought. Frank Swetz provides an analysis of the Haidao's surveying problems. In particular, he details surveying techniques and undertakes a mathematical exposition of the Chinese chong cha solution procedures. The Haidao is a testimony to the ingenuity and skill of China's early surveyors and its author, Liu Hui. This study complements and extends the findings of Swetz's previous book, Was Pythagoras Chinese? An Examination of Right Triangle Theory in Ancient China

The Writings of the Roman Land Surveyors
Author: J. B. Campbell
Publisher: Roman Society Publications
ISBN:
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 648
Book Description
The Corpus Agrimensorum Romanorum , compiled in the 5th century AD, was a collection of Roman surveying manuals, produced by a variety of authors, writing at different times and with very different priorities; authors include Julius Frontius, Aegennius Urbicus, Hyginus, Balbus, Siculus Flaccus, as well as miscellaneous texts. This substantial volume aims to make these sources more accessible by presenting the Latin text with facing English translation, suceeded by a 130 page commentary. The eclectic choice of sources avoids the purely technical texts and includes those which Campbell considers to be most useful for historians, archaeologists and those studying ancient technology. The introduction discusses the text and authors, the origins, development and status of surveying and Roman land division. A series of illustrations, diagrams, a glossary of terms and a large bibliography conclude the volume.

Coming to Terms
Author: Markus Asper
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3111314537
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 312
Book Description
Terminologies present various challenges to their inventors and to their users, ranging from epistemic adequacy over linguistic concerns to matters of strategy and group construction. With respect to historical terminologies, however, research has been dominated by linguistic approaches. Breaking new ground, Coming to Terms collects eleven articles that combine an interest in the history of knowledge, mostly ancient Greek, with research on scientific terminologies. They all share an interest in terminological practices, that is, questions such as how and when to coin a term and then what to do with it. Among the fields discussed are astronomy, the Roman surveyors, Aristotelian science, Renaissance and modern biology, contemporary medicine, ancient Chinese philosophy, 20th-century physics, and colonial linguistics. Confronting ancient with modern terminologies, the collection intends to test integrative interpretive approaches. Thus, the collection documents how rich ancient (and modern) terminologies are and shows that they are, beyond lexicography, worth being studied per se.

Shakespeare and the Geography of Difference
Author: John Gillies
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521458535
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 312
Book Description
In this engaging book, John Gillies explores Shakespeare's geographic imagination, and discovers an intimate relationship between Renaissance geography and theatre, arising from their shared dependence on the opposing impulses of taboo-laden closure and hubristic expansiveness. Dr Gillies shows that Shakespeare's images of the exotic, the 'barbarous, outlandish or strange', are grounded in concrete historical fact: to be marginalised was not just a matter of social status, but of belonging, quite literally, to the margins of contemporary maps. Through an examination of the icons and emblems of contemporary cartography, Dr Gillies challenges the map-makers' overt intentions, and the attitudes and assumptions that remained below the level of consciousness. His study of map and metaphor raises profound questions about the nature of a map, and of the connections between the semiology of a map and that of the theatre.
