Digital Video: An Introduction to MPEG-2

Digital Video: An Introduction to MPEG-2 PDF Author: Barry G. Haskell
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0306469820
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 451

Book Description
Digital Video offers comprehensive coverage of the MPEG-2 audio/visual digital compression standard. The treatment includes the specifics needed to implement an MPEG-2 Decoder, including the syntax and semantics of the coded bitstreams. Since the MPEG-2 Encoders are not specified by the standard, and are actually closely held secrets of many vendors, the book only outlines the fundamentals of encoder design and algorithm optimization.

MPEG-2

MPEG-2 PDF Author: John Watkinson
Publisher: Butterworth-Heinemann
ISBN:
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 264

Book Description
Digital compression techniques can now be applied to video and audio systems on a wide scale. MPEG-2 provides interoperability standards for compression, storage and communication. It is found in a wide range of applications including: DVD; teleconferencing; satellite news gathering; television broadcasting.

Digital Television

Digital Television PDF Author: Hervé Benoit
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 0240516958
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 216

Book Description
Writing for readers with a background in electronics, some knowledge of analog television, and a basic digital background, Benoit (Philips Semiconductors, France) intends this book as a summary and starting point rather than a handbook for experts. He describes the complex problems that had to be solved in order to define reliable standards for broadcasting digital pictures, and he explains the solutions chosen for the European digital video broadcasting (DVB) system based on the international MPEG-2 compression standard. The book ends with a description of a digital integrated receiver decoder, or set-top box, and a discussion of future prospects. Adapted and translated by the author from a 1996 work published in French (Paris: Dunod). The second edition adds a chapter on software interoperability. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.

Digital Video and HD

Digital Video and HD PDF Author: Charles Poynton
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080504302
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 737

Book Description
Rapidly evolving computer and communications technologies have achieved data transmission rates and data storage capacities high enough for digital video. But video involves much more than just pushing bits! Achieving the best possible image quality, accurate color, and smooth motion requires understanding many aspects of image acquisition, coding, processing, and display that are outside the usual realm of computer graphics. At the same time, video system designers are facing new demands to interface with film and computer system that require techniques outside conventional video engineering. Charles Poynton's 1996 book A Technical Introduction to Digital Video became an industry favorite for its succinct, accurate, and accessible treatment of standard definition television (SDTV). In Digital Video and HDTV, Poynton augments that book with coverage of high definition television (HDTV) and compression systems. For more information on HDTV Retail markets, go to: http://www.insightmedia.info/newsletters.php#hdtv With the help of hundreds of high quality technical illustrations, this book presents the following topics: * Basic concepts of digitization, sampling, quantization, gamma, and filtering * Principles of color science as applied to image capture and display * Scanning and coding of SDTV and HDTV * Video color coding: luma, chroma (4:2:2 component video, 4fSC composite video) * Analog NTSC and PAL * Studio systems and interfaces * Compression technology, including M-JPEG and MPEG-2 * Broadcast standards and consumer video equipment

The MPEG Handbook

The MPEG Handbook PDF Author: John Watkinson
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1136028978
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 450

Book Description
A complete, professional 'bible' on all aspects of audio and video compression using MPEG technology, including the MPEG-4 standard and, in this second edition, H-264. The clarity of explanation and depth of technical detail combine to make this book an essential and definitive reference work. THE MPEG HANDBOOK is both a theoretical and practical treatment of the subject. Fundamental knowledge is provided alongside practical guidance on how to avoid pitfalls and poor quality. The often-neglected issues of reconstructing the signal timebase at the decoder and of synchronizing the signals in a multiplex are treated fully here. Previously titled MPEG-2, the book is frequently revised to cover the latest applications of the technology.

Digital Pictures

Digital Pictures PDF Author: Arun Netravali
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468412949
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 596

Book Description
For thousands of years mankind has been creating pictures which attempt to portray real or imagined scenes as perceived by human vision. Cave drawings, paintings and photographs are able to stimulate the visual system and conjure up thoughts of faraway places, imagined situations or pleasant sensations. The art of motion picture creation has advanced to the point where viewers often undergo intense emotional experiences. On-the spot news coverage gives the impression of actually witnessing events as they unfold. Relatively recently, other forms of visual information have been invented which do not, in themselves, stimulate the eye. For example, vol tage variations in an electrical signal, as in television, can represent in analogous fashion the brightness variations in a picture. In this form the visual information can be stored on magnetic tape or transmitted over long distances, and, at least for engineering purposes, it is often much more use ful than other forms which do stimulate human vision. With the evolution of digital techniques for information processing, storage, and transmission, the need arises for digital representation of visual information, that is, the representation of images by a sequence of integer numbers (usually binary). In this form, computer processing and digital circuit techniques can be utilized which were undreamed of only a short time ago. Machine manipulation and interpretation of visual infor mation becomes possible. Sophisticated techniques can be employed for efficient storage of images. And processing methods can be used to significantly reduce the costs of picture transmission.
