Extrasynaptic GABAA Receptors

Extrasynaptic GABAA Receptors PDF Author: Adam C. Errington
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 149391426X
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 301

Book Description
GABA is the principal inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS and acts via GABAA and GABAB receptors. Recently, a novel form of GABAA receptor-mediated inhibition, termed “tonic” inhibition, has been described. Whereas synaptic GABAA receptors underlie classical “phasic” GABAA receptor-mediated inhibition (inhibitory postsynaptic currents), tonic GABAA receptor-mediated inhibition results from the activation of extrasynaptic receptors by low concentrations of ambient GABA. Extrasynaptic GABAA receptors are composed of receptor subunits that convey biophysical properties ideally suited to the generation of persistent inhibition and are pharmacologically and functionally distinct from their synaptic counterparts. This book highlights ongoing work examining the properties of recombinant and native extrasynaptic GABAA receptors and their preferential targeting by endogenous and clinically relevant agents. In addition, it emphasizes the important role of extrasynaptic GABAA receptors in GABAergic inhibition throughout the CNS and identifies them as a major player in both physiological and pathophysiological processes.

Jasper's Basic Mechanisms of the Epilepsies

Jasper's Basic Mechanisms of the Epilepsies PDF Author: Jeffrey Noebels
Publisher: OUP USA
ISBN: 0199746540
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 1258

Book Description
Jasper's Basic Mechanisms, Fourth Edition, is the newest most ambitious and now clinically relevant publishing project to build on the four-decade legacy of the Jasper's series. In keeping with the original goal of searching for "a better understanding of the epilepsies and rational methods of prevention and treatment.", the book represents an encyclopedic compendium neurobiological mechanisms of seizures, epileptogenesis, epilepsy genetics and comordid conditions. Of practical importance to the clinician, and new to this edition are disease mechanisms of genetic epilepsies and therapeutic approaches, ranging from novel antiepileptic drug targets to cell and gene therapies.

Biology of the NMDA Receptor

Biology of the NMDA Receptor PDF Author: Antonius M. VanDongen
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 142004415X
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 368

Book Description
The NMDA receptor plays a critical role in the development of the central nervous system and in adult neuroplasticity, learning, and memory. Therefore, it is not surprising that this receptor has been widely studied. However, despite the importance of rhythms for the sustenance of life, this aspect of NMDAR function remains poorly studied. Written

Single Molecule Microscopy in Neurobiology

Single Molecule Microscopy in Neurobiology PDF Author: Nobuhiko Yamamoto
Publisher: Humana
ISBN: 9781071605349
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 331

Book Description
This volume looks at the methodology and techniques used by experts to study how certain molecules function in specific locations, and their temporal patterns. Chapters in this book cover topics such as in vivo single-molecule tracking of voltage-gated calcium channels with split-fluorescent proteins in CRISPR-engineering C. elegans; protein-protein interactions in membranes using single particle tracking; neuropathological diseases revealed by quantum-dot single particle tracking; SPoD-OnSPAN; and investigating molecular diffusion inside small neuronal compartments with two-photon fluorescence correlation spectroscopy. In the Neuromethods series style, chapters include the kind of detail and key advice from the specialists needed to get successful results in your laboratory. Cutting-edge and comprehensive, Single Molecule Microscopy is a valuable resource for any researcher interested in learning more about this important field.

Tourette Syndrome

Tourette Syndrome PDF Author: Davide Martino
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0197543219
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 577

Book Description
Tourette syndrome (TS) has become increasingly recognised within society and has gained scientific interest worldwide. Knowledge of its clinical presentation, mechanisms of disease, and available treatment approaches has increased remarkably over the last two decades. Likewise, the way clinicians, teachers, social care workers, and families face the problems manifested by patients with TS is rapidly evolving. Tourette Syndrome, edited by Davide Martino and James F. Leckman, offers a unique opportunity to capture this knowledge advance through a comprehensive and up-to-date overview. Tourette Syndrome covers all the main aspects related to TS, analyzing its complex clinical presentation, the novel viewpoints of causes and mechanisms, state-of-the-art assessment techniques, and the diversity of treatment options. Multidisciplinarity is the main asset of this volume, which represents a source of consultation for a wide audience of professionals, integrated with video tutorials related to particularly complex areas of patient management. Medical and PhD students, as well as post-doctoral scientists, will be able to use the volume as a valuable learning source.
